The Next Angry Birds Game Is Angry Birds 2

No, it doesn’t really make much sense, but Rovio have just announced a new Angry Birds game. In a surprising twist, it’s going to be called Angry Birds 2, and be the first numbered sequel to the hugely successful game series.

It’s a name that baffles almost as much as Grand Theft Auto IV having come after two full blooded sequels to Grand Theft Auto III or Microsoft’s follow up operating system to Window 8 being called Windows 10 (and let’s face it, Windows 7’s numbering already needed a fair bit of fudging to get to).

Thankfully, Eurogamer have a nice little run down of all the Angry Birds games that we’ve seen to date, so that I don’t have to look it up myself.

There was the original Angry Birds, then Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Friends, Angry Birds Space, Angry Birds Star Wars, Angry Birds Star Wars 2, Angry Birds Transformers, Angry Birds Go!, Angry Birds Epic, Angry Birds Fight!, Angry Birds Stella, Angry Birds Stella Pop!, Bad Piggies and the upcoming Angry Birds Under Pigstruction.

Of course, there’s a simple explanation for all of this:

Well played, Rovio. Well played.

  1. I’m sure they choose names so it makes people scratch their heads and talk about it.

  2. It would of made more sense with the order being ‘Angry Birds Stella’ then ‘Angry Birds Fight!’… I’ve seen that before!

  3. Never heard of half of those. & I thought that there were a lot already! :/

  4. Ah ok, they were pre-seagulls.

    • Eggs-actly, maybe the nest installment could be called “trouble in t’aviary” from a Yorkshire pigeon fancier’s perspective.
      I’ll stop now! :P

      • On the subject of pigeons…

  5. Windows 10 is named so because within some computer code utilised by Microsoft, 9 is already occupied by 95/98.

    1. Windows
    2. Windows 95
    3. Windows 98
    4. Windows 2000
    5. Windows XP
    6. Windows Vista
    7. Windows 7
    8. Windows 8
    9. Windows 8.1 (somewhat cheating)
    10. Windows 10

    • No love for Windows 2, 3, NT or ME? If 8.1 gets to count as a full version, then so should all of those!

      Microsoft’s fudged some reason, but it doesn’t make it any less of a dodgy marketing gimmick than this being Angry Birds 2!

    • Not strictly true. There are a lot of applications, drivers etc out there still, mostly from 3rd parties rather than MS (who could fix their own code) that do the equivalent of:

      if(windowsVersion.StartsWith(“9”))
      // it’s windows 95/98
      else
      // it’s NT or newer

      So calling it Windows 9 would send the code down the wrong code path and potentially cause issues. Of course how many of said applications and drivers are still in use today is anyones guess but far cheaper support wise and easier just to call it something else…

  6. Wow,what a surprising twist i never saw that coming.
