New Carmageddon Game Announced

Carmageddon is a fond memory for many people around my age. I fondly remember skidding sideways through groups of people zombies and rejoicing at the satisfying splattering that ensued. Vehicular massacre was never so much fun.

Well, now the original indie developers that made the original and its sequel, Carpocalypse Now, have reacquired the rights to the franchise. Stainless Games have announced that they are working on Carmageddon: Reincarnation for the downloadable market. They hope to release the title in 2012 and are looking for partners to help achieve that goal. No platform is mentioned but the press release mentions Stainless’ experience with multiple platforms and success on the XBL Marketplace.

The studio’s co-founder, Patrick Buckland, is sure of the title’s modern-day relevance:

Carmageddon has returned to its Indie developer roots, and the time is right to bring the game to a new audience. Originally an ambitious title that tested the hardware limits of its day, we’re excited that the game will finally get the showcase it deserves on today’s platforms.

  1. I used to play Carpocalypse Now for hours on end, loved it! :) Cant wait for some more

  2. Heres hoping the physics, car handling and sheer fun are all in place – loved carmageddon

    • Here’s hoping the handling isn’t. It was effing awful and you know it! ;-)

  3. I would like to see the return of people to mow down. Zombies just doesn’t quite have the same level of ‘car’nage (see what i did there?) & is somewhat less satifying.

Not that i am sadistic or anything…

I think we are at a point where it can be humans though – God knows the population of GTA have suffered at my hands behind a wheel.

    • I agree. I think the market has changed significantly since the original games so that now a game carrying the relevant 18 certificate could show this level of mindless violence. Maybe they could try and wrap a plot around it like the people being paedophiles or something.

      • Yeah, or Welsh.

      • They see me trollin’
        LOL

      • Oi!! I’m welsh, nowt wrong with us’s :P

      • Correct. There isn’t. I’m Welsh too! :-)

  4. I loved Carpocalypse Now. I preferred it to the original. The Iron Maiden (was it them?) soundtrack, vast areas to explore…It was like a sandbox game almost if I remember correctly. Me want!

    • Indeed, Iron Maiden and Sentience. ‘Be Quick or Be Dead’ is an epic track and turned me on to Iron Maiden who I knew nothing of before that game.
It was an innovative title in a lot of ways and very underappreciated

      • Sorry can’t help it but…. MAIDEN RULES \m/
Going to see them LIVE on 20th July ^^

      • I much prefered the instrumental Fear Factory on the first game. I thought at the time that it set the tone perfectly. And I’m really not a fan of metal.

      • up the irons!

  5. This is great, great news. We simply don’t have enough games in the RPD (Running People Down) genre and GTA goes only so far to satisfy me.

    • Agreed.

I whittled away many, many hours on the first game and the Splat Pack.. ahhh.. fond memories.

  6. Wow, I remember playing Carmageddon on PS1! I loved that game. This’ll be a must buy if it’s anything like that.

  7. Just as long as the cows make a re-appearance

  8. well I just saw the countdown roll back round to 99,99,99

  9. now its all messed up

  10. Carmageddon 1 and TDR2000 are still sitting in my cd shelf. Nothing beats instant car repairs… at 200mph… in the air! :-)
