PS3 Hits Firmware 3.66

Anyone switching on their PlayStation 3s this morning will notice that there’s a mandatory update to the system software.

The update, which takes the PS3 to version 3.66 is a “minor” update, improves system stability during “use of PS3 format software” and, apparently, does some magic with the “network services”.

Wonderfully vague and only a tad annoying.

  1. I’m hoping the software stability will make some improvements to my system, I’ve had no end of trouble since PSN came back (whatever FW No. that was?)

    PlayTV recordings/buffer stutters to unwatchable

    Everything takes ages to load. GT5 takes up to 6 mins (if it loads at all)

    Infamous 2 stutters like crazy on heavy going bits and when you slide along cables it cant keep up with loading in the city, so I either hit an invisible wall or fall through the floor!

    Downloaded trailers stutter or stop completely

    Dead Nation takes just under 3mins to load and then stutters like crazy.

    XMB takes almost 2mins to load in when you quit a game….

    I could go on…… needless to say its firkin’ annoying. Starting to think its my HDD but might see what this FW does first.

  2. hey people, I have just been d/loading the update and when it came to restarting the ps3 the hdmi signal went however the system is still on?? fan made a bit of noise (not ylod amount) and no yellow light at all?? hope its not died as i’m on my 3rd refurb up to now. Does anyone have the local rate sony uk helpline contact number?

    • thanks for the overwhelming response! had to do a full system restore which is a pain, but the beast still lives.

      • Surely you just needed to reset the display settings?!
        1. Ensure PS3 is off
        2. Hold power button until you hear it beep
        3. Display settings are reset!

    • MrBlack Mine did that several updates ago and i have not had HDMI since. I went through all of the reboots and sony tech support. It is just over, and now my other output looks like crap cant read the words on games or on the internet browser.

      • thats sucks, everythings back to normal for me after the system restore.

      • I know right, i am just gonna get a new one when i have the money, I have the 60 gb so i cant just trash it i paid $600 for it so i have to keep it untill it dies completely. If i was dishonest i would take to gamestop and trade it but that wouldnt be fair to the next person.

  3. A bit sad I know, but I liked the good old days when supposedly ’empty’ security & stability updates always seemed to include a tiny new feature or setting which was undocumented.

  8. It must be good as it has naff all in it. I think this is just patching any holes in the PS3’s OS to avoid it getting exploited. Still i was hoping for some new features and the trophy pop ups to be clear in this update as the trophy notifcation can block a part of a HUD which is a tad bit annoying.

    • True, but likewise, why do developers continue to put things in the top right hand corner of the screen? They are more than aware that a trophy may obscure whatever it is that is there & so it baffles me why some games continue to have this.

      • was playing arkham lastnight & it baffles me, why they put the health bar, directly over bats head.

    • same re online status & msgs received. I have a theme, that removes xmb icons, also gives you a clear notification box.

    • tad pointless the small little ping does not affect gameplay imo.

    • Took me about 4min, if that & my broadboand speed isn’t anything special.

  10. Whilst downloading my PS3 has started making a noise like a Geiger counter, and there was just a loud pop. Should I be worried?
