PS3 Firmware 4.46 Out, Fixes Broken 4.45

Sony have released PS3 System Software 4.46, which replaces the buggy 4.45, as well as fixing some network issues some users were having. If your PS3 was broken by updating to 4.45 last week, the following information (from PlayStation) should hopefully see you right.

Step 1: Manually Download System Software

  1. You will need a USB Mass Storage device such as a USB flash drive with at least 168 MB of free space. If your PS3 is either CECHA00/CECHB00 series model, you can also use Memory Stick™, SD Memory Card, and CompactFlash®.
  2. Create a folder named “PS3” on the storage media or USB device.
  3. Within the PS3 folder, create a folder named “UPDATE”.
  4. Using your computer, click the following hyperlink to begin downloading system software 4.46
  5. Download the update data from the webpage and save it in the “UPDATE” folder.
    • Location: Save in the “PS3” folder > “UPDATE” folder
    • File name: Save as file name “PS3UPDAT.PUP”

Note: If the data is not saved in the correct way, the PS3 will not recognize the update data. The folder name must be in all uppercase letters.

Step 2: Activate Safe Mode

  1. With the PS3 off (power light should be red), touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the 1st beep indicating that the PS3 is powering on.
  2. Continue to hold the power button, and after approximately 5 seconds you will hear a 2nd beep.
  3. Continue to hold the power button and after 5 more seconds you’ll hear a 3rd beep, and system will power off (Power light goes red).
  4. Release power button.
  5. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the 1st beep, again for PS3 power on.
  6. Continue to hold and after approximately 5 seconds you will hear the 2nd beep for video reset.
  7. Continue to hold and after 5 seconds you will hear a quick double beep.  At that point release power button.
  8. If you succeeded in activating Safe Mode, you will see a message on screen saying, “Connect the controller using a USB cable and then press the PS button”.
  9. Connect a controller to the PS3 with a USB cable.

If you were not able to get into Safe Mode, your system may need service.

Step 3: Manually Update PS3 Software

  1. Connect the storage media to PS3 system.
  2. Select [6 – System Update] and Press X.
    • Please note: Data and settings may be deleted if you choose any of the first (5) options. Please make sure to only choose option [6 – System Update].
  3. Press Start and Select at the same time.
  4. The PS3 system will restart and recognizes the update file in the storage media.
  5. Press right on the d-pad to scroll through the update description and user agreement.
  6. Press X to confirm the update.
  7. The system will now install the new system software and restart automatically upon completion.

Good luck!

  1. Should be able to happily switch my console on then tonight, hopefully Plus will have auto downloaded 4.46 for me over night

  2. Does this fix the IP fragments error on network tests. I keep on getting this error even thought NAT 2 is OK. Then the speed tests fail. Nothing has changed on my setup. All since the failed 4.45 firmware. Hopefully this will be fixed..

    • Yep.

      • Nice :-) thanks

      • The IP fragments issue was fixed around midnight last night without the patch,i only found the problem towards the end of wednesday’s maintenance, also my isp had been adjusting my connection that night so i got intouch with them, they came back said it wasn’t them so i asked R1M to do the test and he said he was indeed getting the same issue. I phoned playstation helpline and the guy said they knew about it,and suggested adjusting my mtu to 1500 and getting my isp to do the same! the second guy i spoke to said there was maintenance still going on thurs 4 till about midnight, come midnight the issue had indeed been fixed and the store was functioning normally.

  3. That’s good to hear, the IP fragments problem was a total mystery and BT technicians were unable to verify what the issue was having coincidentally just had the latest BT Homehub 4 Router installed which inevitably took the blame. The PSN worked fine but it was troubling not to be able to get past the NAT 2 stage in the XMB connection test without errors.
    Top stuff ;)

  4. Have they added cross game chat?

    • Just bugger off ;-)

I can’t wait for the PS4 is out, no more of this joke.

      • Unless xgc b0rks on PS4, and becomes a “it’ll be patched in soon” thing

      • Old jokes never die.
On my deathbed I will have my great grandchildren wondering why i keep yammering about XGC when the new PS27 will have group telepathy built in.

    • Awayze is trolling as usual. Ignore him.

  5. This is a great little guide, it’s a simple process but can be mind boggling if you didn’t get your GCSE in googling technical help. I can’t remember if it applies for updates but it might be worth checking if the USB drive needs to be FAT32 format to be read by the PS3? Otherwise, good work TSA, ill bookmark this for later.

  6. Still bricked!
The update has done nothing for the 4.41 update’s coincidental death of my bd reader.
From the sublime to the ridiculous. Months to go to ps4 and many non-backward compatible games to enjoy before then IF I had a console.

    • Get plus if you haven’t already, which you probably will anyway once the PS4 is out. Play the “free” games until the PS4 is out ant then get a cheap second hand ps3.

  7. Cool, i’ll grab it later on as i switched off the auto-updates in the meantime.

    • Aye, me too. It’ll be great to not to have to worry about the PS3 being bricked.

    • Auto update doesn’t auto install as you always need to accept T&C with a FW update… it just auto downloads it for you

      • Yep, i know that but i was playing it safe cc_star! ;)

  8. if you didn’t install 4.45 do you still install 4.46 ? Wasn’t there something about hiding trophies ? Does 4.46 introduce this to people who didn’t install 4.45 ?

    • It’ll only have 4.46 available for download which you should install, but if you auto-downloaded 4.45 with PS plus then follow the instructions as above in the article.
Trophy notification hide/display (ping and trophy icon) has been introduced with this firmware not trophy hiding….I think that’s reserved for next gen.

  9. I installed this update and now I can’t even enter safe mode on my old style PS3 fat model. When I press the and hold the start button it beeps once then powers off with flashing red light! I can’t even download the update and copy to my external hdd as it says error missing files? I live in Spain and called PS and was on answer phone until it ate all my credit. So now I have no PS3 no phone credit and I’m at a loss of what I can do! Even my COD MW3 is stuck inside and can’t force eject! PLEASE HELP!!!

    • You could be at stage 3 in the instruction guide above and need to let go of the power button before pressing and holding it again for the double beep at stage 7.
I’m assuming that there’s still life in the console if it’s able to tell you that there are missing files with the update.
Try again following the instructions to the letter for all three steps in the article above.
Good Luck, hope it works but if it is bricked I reckon Sony should be liable and compensate you anyway…..unless it’s YLOD’d ;)

      • No when I mentioned missing files I meant when i tried to download to my mac and then copy to external hdd. I managed to do fan test which ejected the game but still after pressing blinks red like YLOD. This was all fine until the update! What are my chances of PS3 repairing for free?

        Cheers

      • Well it’d be a heck of a coincidence for it to have YLOD’d at the very time you updated to Virus 4.45 so I’d push for a free repair through customer support.
I don’t think that the 4.45 bricking has the same effect as a melted circuit board that YLOD gets, Sony would know from inspection what caused it’s demise!

  10. Downloaded the latest firmware to my 40 G Phat model PS3 (has a 250 G HDD fitted), installed it, went to bed, as just come home from night shift.

Turn it on this afternoon, all seemed fine, then 30 mins in, machine beeps, shuts down with flashing red light.can reboot in safe mode, but it’ll shut down even in safe mode.

Phoned Sony-No. nothing what so ever to do with firmware update, component gone in your PS3…skip to me adding £120 to my Credit Card, them sending someone out to get my PS3 on Tues and sat here twiddling thumbs till they arrange for a replacement.

Might well be a component gone, machine is knocking on a bit, but so soon after new firmware? hmnnnn.
