Sony Secretly Testing New “Store” Design

According to The Register, Sony are secretly testing a new design layout and aesthetic style for their rather dated looking PlayStation Store.

“Sony is now market-testing a new design that de-clutters the screen,” says the site, citing sources that claim the new look is “an aesthetic layout with logically marked sections and rolodex lists”.

Apparently there’s also going to be a new “live search” method that lists results as users type, much like Google.

In terms of the Movie section, expect an “IMDB-style database” with “key details appearing on the right of the screen, such as leading actors”.  These links will take you to the actor’s own page, where you can then go to their other films.

Expect a ‘Deals’ section, brighter colours and an all-round visual revamp.  We’ll reach out to Sony to see if we can get anything more on this.

  1. I like the store design as it is, easy to use and simple, why fix something that isnt broken?

  3. The search function definitely needs to be improved.
    I did a search for Dirt3 and it came up with ‘no results’, I then searched through the different screens and found it.

    • Maybe because it’s “Dirt 3” and not “Dirt3”? :P

  4. I think the xmb wil be gones next gen.. Im always happy to see new stuff so ill look forward to a fresh store

  5. How on earth is the current store ‘rather dated’? It looks modern and is well laid out and free of clutter, which is more than I can say for the XBL marketplace which is just clutter for the sake of clutter and menu after menu.

  6. Will the new layout be worldwide? I’m willing to bet the EU/UK Store will be the last to get updated.

  7. Only thing I dislike on the store is the way the background images sometimes make it impossible to read the text. That is all.

  8. Another vote here for some sort of auto-contrasting font to save my eyes.

  9. Finally! it was getting a little hard to navigate all that content.

  10. I hope that this is more integrated into the xmb. So that they would have a store icon on the x-axis and videos, demos and such on the y-axis.
