Sony Secretly Testing New “Store” Design

According to The Register, Sony are secretly testing a new design layout and aesthetic style for their rather dated looking PlayStation Store.

“Sony is now market-testing a new design that de-clutters the screen,” says the site, citing sources that claim the new look is “an aesthetic layout with logically marked sections and rolodex lists”.

Apparently there’s also going to be a new “live search” method that lists results as users type, much like Google.

In terms of the Movie section, expect an “IMDB-style database” with “key details appearing on the right of the screen, such as leading actors”.  These links will take you to the actor’s own page, where you can then go to their other films.

Expect a ‘Deals’ section, brighter colours and an all-round visual revamp.  We’ll reach out to Sony to see if we can get anything more on this.

  1. It’s going to be cheaper?:D I hope they do clean it up a bit as it can be a pain in the backside to navigate at times. Also i hope they start putting more demos up and stop pulling them off the store.

  2. It’s so slow to load. If a redesign speeds it up, then all good!

  3. the current design is way too complicated. It needs a massive overhaul in my opinion, this can only be a good thing personally. Its just too cluttered

  4. I am BEGGING Sony implement a better way of viewing your previous purchases. I have over 350 thanks to a year on PS+ and low financial willpower but all I can see is the order in which they were paid for. It needs a filter for games, avatars, DLC etc. if only for long-term users

    • This!

    • Oh god yes! I was searching for the WRC demo last week, it was gone from the store but as i had downloaded it previously i went to my downloads list to find it… it was such a pain to have to scroll through hundreds of items to find it – i hope one of Sony’s software designers has a eureka moment about that! :)

      • Yeah! Or failing that somebody in Sony’s software design department gives me a job!? (can’t hurt to ask right?)

  5. It does its function perfectly fine for me.

  6. Nice to see the’ve got their priorities right. How about bringing the browser into the 21st century first. Bring the original, higher res xmb back also.

    • Original hi-res xmb?… I wasn’t aware of it ever being different (stupid sparkles aside) and I’ve been looking at it for a long time now

      • pre-sparkles. although options now says classic, it isn’t the same as the very first font. I had my hdtv about 2wks before the firmware, that lowered the icons resolution. I like many others noticed the change. (the update that gave us the friend boxes.)

  7. I wish they would fix the damnable browser before they start messing with the, mostly fine, store.

  8. if they can get rid of those bloody garish backgrounds that make seeing the items on the store almost impossible, the orange ones are the absolute worst, and stop that bloody five seconds or more that the store freezes after you download every single item, that would be nice.

  9. I like the PS Store. It looks pretty.

  10. It certainly seems too cluttered up as it is now, hoping for better. Also any chance of any actual decent offers on the film store would be welcome
