Capcom Boss Speaks Out About PSN Hack

Capcom’s David Reeves has spoken out (to ME Gamers) regarding the recent PlayStation Network hack and subsequent downtime.

“Yeah… we had digital delivery titles… a lot of them,” he said when asked whether Capcom lost out during the period the Store was down. “We lost out, particularly in Europe and North America, by not being able to put [the games] up onto the PSN.”

He then goes on to discuss people’s buying habits, in particular the use of pre-paid cards in the aftermath of the huge personal detail leak.

“We have seen in the last week… the last 10 days, quite a bit of resurgence in [the number of users], which is pleasant,” he says.  “We have seen on PSN, and probably Sony are in a better place to tell you this, that there is a resurgence in people buying the generic PSN cards in retail stores rather than putting up their credit card details.”

“People are playing it a bit safe at the moment because the hackers will be back [laughs], that’s my personal opinion. I mean… they will right? They are going to say ‘so you think you are secure?'”

“Capcom did suffer for a month,” he continues, and we were not alone.”

Capcom’s DRM meant that some games users had purchased wouldn’t work whilst the PSN was down.  The publisher previously said they were losing millions.

  1. psh capcom can afford to lose a few million with there on disc dlc they deserve too

    • fuck capcom what about the people locked out of there games due to capcom’s shitty DRM….

      • ;( Sony has used that DRM too (it’s technically theirs) >_< I very much so hope that they don't use it again. They've done it for 2 games so far.

  2. DRM shouldn’t be used at all

  3. I suffer everytime I have to play Resi Evil 5 with it’s completely moronic control scheme and inability to allow you to continue from checkpoint if you have to quit out of the game, and I’m guessing I’m not alone in that either

  4. Sony lost out as well what a nob saying it will happen again & laughing it must have really hurt to find it funny.

    • been confused as to why he is laughing, as it will only hurt Capcom more if it does. Oh well, lets all laugh together shall we, maybe it will hurt less.

      • Maybe he knows something we don’t – Maybe he is…Anonymous!! :O

Tin foil hat anyone? I have plenty spare! :P

  5. And once again not a single word about the people locked out of there games due to capcom’s DRM

I love the CAPCOM games, but this attitude has to change

  6. I know you weren’t the only ones Capcom. Sony may have suffered too. Moaning minnies.

  7. It would seem that with DRM games you don’t always get what you pay for..

    • that’s kinda the point of drm, not getting what you pay for.
it’s designed to make sure you never own what you buy.

      • It’s not just that you don’t own it but the fact that if you can’t connect online you can’t even play the offline mode of the game you paid for.

  8. once again capcom show little to no concern about their customers.

capcom have shown they are becoming one of the greedier publishers out there.

from selling on disc content as dlc, to overly intrusive drm on downloadable titles to removing standard game features in their unwarranted, if not actually illegal, attack on the preowned market.

i have absolutely zero sympathy for capcom.
they lost revenue from one of the many points of sale they have, that include, retail on all the formats, and downloadable on almost all the formats, including mobiles and Ios.

they made a bit less money, that’s all.

i have much more concern for the smaller psn publisher, that relies on the income from psn sales almost exclusively.

who cares about the greedy giant that only gets a six course meal instead of seven when there’s a little guy not eating at all.

i think support for capcom on the psn will have dropped a little with their selfish attitude of late.
and they’ll have nobody to blame but themselves.

  9. I don’t think I’ve heard a good word about Capacom for a long time, and to the best of my knowledge they have never made a game that I like so I’m not that bothered about their ‘suffering’ to be entirely honest. Loads of devs and publishers have lost out as a result of the hacking, moaning about it just makes you seem whiny and spoilt, especially when you’re the only one doing it.

    • Never is a strong word. Although they haven’t made anything worth buying this console generation, Resident Evil 4 and DMC3 are two of my favourite PS2 games.

I agree they should quit their whining and start apologising to everyone screwed over by their horrendous DRM.

  10. Old news….

    • In what way? The source interview was only posted today…
