Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan has dismissed rumours that the console giant is about to unleash the PlayStation 4.
CVG spoke to the new boss about the mythical console;
All I’m focused on right now is making the most of PS3,” he said. “We’ve over 50 million PS2’s installed across our PAL territory, and as you’ve heard yesterday we’re up to 22 [million] on PS3, so there is a long way to go. That’s all we need to focus on for now.
However, some market analysts have noted that Sony always drop the price of their current console before launching a new one. The PS2 had a huge price drop just before the launch of the PlayStation 3 and the ‘fat’ PS3s received a discount just before the launch of the PS3 Slim. Â
The analysts have speculated that as Sony shipped 25% less consoles in Q2 2011 compared to 2010, the company have decided to ‘cut its losses’ and move on to the PS4.

Yeah, the recent cut in price is interesting, as it’s a known part of the product revitalisation cycle. I’ve thought that maybe another PS3, maybe super slim, model would appear and then a PS4..? Probably just some crazy idea I’ve made up, but the PS3 is still being improved and added to in such a way that it seems odd to end it and have a fourth.

super slim ps3 makes alot of sense!

Particularly in the wake of the new psp new wii and whatnot…. Who’d dare put money on a redesigned spec kinect, with built in zoom like the one they’re currently blocking?
fattyuk
cash in on what they got if we’re still getting aaa exclusives in 2013 what would the need be for a ps4 and ATM would be it financially worth it? for consumers and manufacturers?
AG2297
I think you speak a lot of sense here
StevenHibs
I reckon we will see it at next years E3
Smallville2106
What could they add to a PS4 that would warrant the cost of upgrading from the PS3?
Could they really improve graphics etc by enough?
fattyuk
Exactly!
AG2297
I think the earliest we would see an announcement of the PS4 is E3 next year and the console released the year after that. Hopefully though, they don’t do that as I see it as too early. The PS3 is getting more and more added to it and with games like UC3 coming, I don’t see any major leaps forward that a new console could give us yet. For me, Id want an announcement of it at E3 in either 2013 or 2014 with a release in 2015.
kivi95
Geez the ps3 have just been here in europe for a litte than 4 and a half year…
2013 sounds good.
kivi95
litte ‘more’ than

My speculation on this matter is better, because I’m not completely stupid.
If I was about to release a new handheld console, I would 110% NOT announce my new home console until I’ve damned well wrapped up my handheld’s launch window.
Exactly how Sony did it with the PS3 unveil, and exactly how Nintendo just did it with their 3DS launch. All of which means Sony is not going to say a single thing until E3 next year, at the earliest.
So quit speculating like fools, OK?
skibadee
agree it will be E3 then late 2013 I reckon.
fattyuk
e3 2013 at the earliest trust me ;o)
bunimomike
If you say that in the voice of Mr T I will PayPal you decent money!
DuffyBox
But that’s the most fun way to speculate! :D
AG2297
Time of the month or in desperate need of some smileys?
skibadee
day one for me if it released.
Awayze
They may announce it in 2012 but it won’t be released until 2014 minimum plus each PS3 has brought a new optical drive format.
PS1- CD
PS2- DVD
PS3- Blu ray
Ps4- ? Blu ray with 200GB space and DVD read speed with no noise unlike the 360 that shakes the whole table when playing from a DVD?
There’s really no need for a PS4, when developers aren’t even taking the full power of the PS3 for games, why would a new PS be needed?
Dange
Not happening any time soon folks, don’t believe this silly rubbish. Ain’t happening next year and will be 2013 at the earliest.
I predict late 2014 Japan, US and we may not even get it until early 2015, so really it’s a none issue right now.
It amazes me how quickly people are brainwashed into thinking the next generation is upon us. It happened just a couple of years after the PS2 initially came out. Back To The Future got it right- history really does repeat itself I guess.
Don’t wish your life away always looking to the future. Enjoy the present! :-D

I’m not really fussed when it comes out, if it’s too early for me I have heaps of PS3 games to keep me occupied until I’m ready to buy it.
