Uncharted 3 Multiplayer Will Require PSN Pass

According to Sony software manager Juan Jimeñez, Naughty Dog’s upcoming blockbuster title will be the second PlayStation 3 exclusive title to make use of the newly adopted “PSN Pass” scheme.

Similar to most online-enabled THQ and EA games (Sony’s Resistance 3 joining the ranks last month) each new copy will harbour a one-use code allowing full access to all multiplayer features. Therefore, those who do buy it second hand run the risk of not receiving a pass and must fork out ten bucks before they can jump online.

  1. This is one of those that I want to play the sp but the mp I’d try but probably not spend much time with if uc2 is anything to go by. It’s also very unfair for those sharing a home with others who also share an interest in playing the mp mode of the game. From what would’ve been a day 1 purchase I see this now bumped down the list to being something bought on sale or even just rented. Not the first and it won’t be the last. In a move designed by publishers to eke a bit more money from gamers in out what is already an expensive pastime, I don’t like it or appreciate it and I won’t have it. A little extremist

    • If you do live in a house with multiple people and PS3s, assuming you don’t have more that five, you can download the ‘unlock code’ to all of them. On top of this, as long as other PSN accounts are on the same PS3 as the one which has downloaded the ‘unlock code’ other people will be able to play Uncharted 3 online as well. This worked for me and my brother got ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’, when I downloaded the ‘unlock code’ he could still play online on his account as well. Also when we lent the game to a trusted friend, I logged on as me on his PS3 and downloaded the code for him as well. The system shouldn’t hinder you and your friends, just people buying used copies. Though I still think its a bit naff.

      • To be fair, BC2 doesn’t use the same online pass style, its a VIP pass that just grants extra content. You should be able to play BC2 online for as long as you like without spending an extra money, you just won’t have all the maps. :)

  2. £100 collectors edition from game for me so i am sooorttteeed.

    • Fatty, do you mean GAME or Gamestop?

      • Gamestop had it initially, but then Game offered it around EGX. I managed to order at Game.

      • GAME :0)

Quidco/Reward points and none of that gamestop rubbish with taking the money now not just before release.

    • I’m hoping to have this as well, but without paying a penny for it. Won the U3 competition the other night at a PS Access event, not quite sure what I’m getting for it yet. Waiting on a phone call.

The guy from Sony told me whatever it is it will most likely be signed! Win.

  3. Honestly, given how quickly games get discounted these days (provided you shop around a bit), who even buys pre-owned games?

    • My thoughts exactly. A couple of years ago 50-60% of the games I purchased were all pre-owned which has been knocked down to around 10-15%

      • I trade in to pre-order, and when my cashback exceed the cost of the preorder, I buy something preowned from the same store.
I more often than not go for something I wouldn’t have noticed twice in the bargain bin, let alone purchased at full prize, so 90% of what I buy are pre-ordered or discounted unused games anyways.

I most often don’t bother using online passes or dlc codes though, as I’d rather trade in quickly and get the most value possible for my games. I will probably never purchase an online pass.

    • Loads of people, it’s a huge market.

Without pre-owned I wouldn’t be able to buy any new games at all as I trade-in to afford them and, yes, retailers do give very healthy discounts from their own margins on stock they’ve bought, but a little extra discount by trading-in a dust gatherer? Yes please.

In a move designed by publishers to eke a bit more money from gamers in out what is already an expensive pastime, I don’t like it or appreciate it and I won’t have it. Not exactly the reaction they were looking for probably but enough is enough and I find the whole online pass thing completely unnecessay and incredibly cheeky. Sure, they’re not hugely expensive but having spent many thousands on gaming over the years (not just on Sony), the time has come where I need to vote with the content of my wallet. A little extremist perhaps and while not killing my passion for gaming, this online pass nonsense is for the first time ever absolutely making me consider my purchases much more carefully. In this instance, uc3 goes backwards in the list of priority games. Depressing.

    • Oops. 3.50 am is not the time to be writing something like this on a mobile phone as perfectly demonstrated by myself. Apologies for the double post.

      • Times are changing eh, I think this will become common for retail games. We will have to buy less games or get jobs as bankers!

      • I’m not buying games with online passes, I want to be able to enjoy them without such restriction. It’s a shame, because I really enjoyed Uncharted 2 as well, but i’m speaking with my wallet this time :l

  5. Even though I disagree with the whoe thing with a passion, within the first few days of release eBay will be flooded with these codes for £2-3 eash. The smart move for anyone looking to save a bit of cash would to buy one of these, and get the game 2nd hand when it hits the £10-15 mark a few months after release. I buy all my games 2nd hand (and never paid more than £15) since in this financial climate, my family’s welfare is more important to me than some american developer’s. £40 is a rip off when a new release blu-ray of a $200 million can be bought for £15. If new release games were £20 I’d buy them all brand new and everyone wins.

  6. I buy every game new these days so not a problem for me at all. I don’t really mind the adoption on the PSN Pass or Online Pass.

    • Unless you want to play it online on another console (Family members or a friends etc..)

      • I’m the only one with a PS3 (2 in fact by use the other one for dvd’s) so happy days for me :P

      • Oh, so the other 40 million must be a statistic mistake… duh! ;)

      • of family and friends…didn’t think I needed to add that on as Killfelix’ comment is related to that

  7. As long the pass can be used on the entire console no matter region of the user, which you normally can and which was possible with R3, I don’t care.

  8. I thought this was pretty much guaranteed anyway as will all future exclusives be aswell probably. Nice to have it confirmed.

  9. I really dont see any need to mention this like its a bad thing! I think developers have every right to protect their goods. I think when you buy a game like any of the Uncharted series, you can see how much effort has gone in to it, and then they add the great multiplayer chunk and you should be paying the premium ‘new’ price for that. because the developer gets nothing, nada, diddly squat from pre owned games and personally pre owned games need to stop, because they’re killing the industry! If you see any reason why this is a bad thing then you’re obviously an ignorant individual with no respect for the developer!

    • Maybe a bit strong there but I pretty much agree with everything you’ve said apart from the “killing the industry!” bit. I think fully-featured pre-owned needs to stop (you want to play it then pay the guys who slaved to make it!) but pre-owned paves the way for many gamers to try a new IP for the first time. I’ll bet loads of people who bought Resistance 3 brand new only did so after picking up Resistance 2 for £12 in the last couple of years

      • Preowned games have been going for years and years and suddenly every developer is saying it’s ruining the industry (and yourself), Why hasn’t it been made a big deal of in the past? these days all companies care about is profits, profits and you guessing it…profits. They are trying to squeeze out as much money from customers as they possible can. We’ve seen it with COD which just added that extra £5 to the RRP and the small increase in DLC price. EA’s and now every bodies introduction of an online pass system. It’s bloody disgraceful. But It doesn’t really bother me (online passes) as I buy new any way.

      • Hey I’m defending the role of pre-owned here! If it gets more people playing games they usually wouldn’t and hence buying sequels new when they’re released then as far as I’m concerned everybody wins, right?

      • Was in response to Rosko sorry. Very true about your comment though. (resistance bit)

    • uncontrollable growth and the desire to profit from that growth is killing the industry. This industry was built on word of mouth advertising and the sharing of not just games, but ideas, mechanics, and shady business practices like licensing a property you don’t own, reverse engineering, and Nintendo’s idea of control and development. In the beginning there was a thing called shareware that helped create this industry, so why would used game sales be killing it now. It’s not the desire to buy something as cheap as possible that ruins other industries. But the fact that the average consumer no longer sees the value in their purchase to buy new is something that any other industry would be concerned about. The industry isn’t being killed… it’s committing suicide.

  10. If I were any of you reading this id expect every single game to have some money snatching code.

Its the future. F’ing stinks but now we will all have to be more diligent with our purchases or settle for no online on all the games you rent or purchase second hand.

    • it’s the future? Wooah! Fuck, you just nearly made my brain explode, how can it be the future?
