PSN Game Sharing Being Cut From 5 To 2

Sony are limiting the number of different PS3s you’ll be able to share your PSN purchases with from five to two from the middle of this month.

According to a report on AndriaSang, the cut-off date is the 18th of November, after which any purchases will be limited to just the console it was downloaded on, and one other.

This isn’t retroactive – any games downloaded before that date will still be shareable between five machines.

The limit is an issue when you take into account that the console total includes PSP, PSP go, Vita and the PS3.  If you download a Minis title after the 18th, for example, it’ll be playable on your PS3 and PSP, but not your Vita unless you deactivate an account.

Deactivation will be easier, however, Sony will be offering up the option online, rather than via the console.

The reasons for doing this are apparently a balance between “consumer convenience” and “content creator copyright protection.”

Update: Sony have confirmed this on their blog.  However, it’s 2 PS3 consoles, and 2 PSP consoles, not combined.

  1. This sucks, at least deactivation is easier.

  2. Can someone clear up something for me, I’m currently on my second ps3 reason, the first one got YLOD, so if this one were to break down and I got my third PS3 and use my already existing account, will I be able to download my downloads purchased after Nov. 18th.
And, I have a two accounts, one is UK for DLC region locked purposes, will I be able to use my UK account downloads with my original account on my third ps3.

Sorry if my questions got a bit confusing :/

    • You will, no problem.
This will only count for future downloads.
Anything downloaded before then will keep the 5 slot standard currently in use.
And you’ll be able to deactivate your account from the YLOD PS3 online, so that shouldn’t be a problem either.

  3. So, another great firmware update from Sony – thank you so much!!!

It seems to me that this is Sony way of dealing with a problem with their software architecture by limiting the end-user instead of fixing the software. Plus, you don’t change the rules while in game.

I feel sorry for anyone who invested in more than 2 PS3 systems in their household. This is obviously another DRM step in the wrong direction, I always praised PS3 for the 5 slot rule as example of respect for their customers, but it seems than the companies like EA and Activision now rule the console companies, and we gamers are just cash cows for them. and Sony also didn’t learn anything from their MP3 and CD DRM fiasco and from certain hack event this year, which suprisingly happened after they removed a feature fromPS3 system software…

  4. Stupid move from Sony.

    1. They’ll be limiting their best customers.
    2. They won’t get any significant money out of this. Gamesharers will probably end up not buying.
    3. Ability to deactivate remotely will make gamesharing more convenient. You can take your stuff back whenever you want.’

How many people are gamesharing anyway?

  5. Can’t wait to delete the old accounts- I got suckered into gamesharing a few years back (when it was condoned). Oh, and my old PSP-1000 is getting deactivated too! :)
2 PS3s, 2 PSPs and 2 Vitas SHOULD be enough, although maybe an option to move one of the 2 PSP or Vita to a PS3 (or any other combo) would be better.
I know some people are going to be genuinely hit by this because they have 3 or more PS3s, but it’ll be a small number. And it won’t affect their previous downloads either.
Still, it’d be nice if they had an option to switch a PSP or Vita activation for a PS3.

  6. This worries me a bit because i currently own 2 ps3 slim’s both activated to my account, and 2 ps3 fats that i no longer have because they died on me (ylod). So tha puts me at 4…..will these two old consoles be on the new sony proposed website on my activation/deactivation list because i would like to deactivate them. According to the sony blog, you must own the old consoles? info from sony is a bit thin at the moment….they ought to just reset eveyones activations and let us all reactivate our current ps3 consoles….at least we would know where we are with it all.

  7. This better not be applied to online passes, i mean i like many others which sony the japanese retards wont realise but in ,many countries parents break up so thats your 2 but, whats worse is that i have 3 ps3s as i got 1 downstairs for my dads hd tv and 1 upstairs so i can go on it when im here often, but i have 1 at my mums too, does that mean my dad or me cant play online at all thanks ot this
