It seems to happen every time – when Sony release a new firmware update, gamers seem to find issues that somehow slipped past the bug testers over at SCEJ. Some are rarer than others, but some end up – apparently – bricking the console. It’s incredibly difficult to prove, of course. When a console that “only does everything” breaks, people are apt to blame the newest addition but with so much going on, pinpointing the cause of an issue is like finding a needle in a big pile of needles.
And so to 4.0, which many are playfully dubbing the ‘Vita update’. A quick scan of various gaming forums (including NeoGAF) suggests that the latest update not only adds the annoying health warning every boot, but also causes a few issues along the way.
The main problem seems to be hard resets and crashes after ejecting the disk – especially after playing Modern Warfare 3. The PS3 will reboot, but then you’ll get the warning message saying the machine wasn’t shutdown properly.
There’s also talk that some downloads are missing: if you grabbed something from the store but didn’t install it, the bubbles are gone but the space is still allocated. Apparently if you redownload the game you’ll get two bubbles, but one can be installed and the other deleted.
It also seems like the ability to copy PS1 and Minis games from the PS3 to the PSP has either been altered or removed, if the installed copy is deleted. It’s not a massive issue – the game can be redownloaded, but it’s an odd feature to remove.
Let us know if you’re experiencing any problems.

When quitting Skyrim yesterday my ps3 froze and came back with a error message saying the HDD might be corrupt..
Not sure if Skyrim or fw4.0 problem.

Yep this is new. It happened to me yesterday after my PS3 crashed trying to use the archaic browser.

I’d be so proud of my PS3 if it rejected MW3 .

My Playstation got the yellow light while updating :(

Yeah, i’m pretty sure that would be purely coincedental & just a case of bad timing i am afraid.

I’ve had the sound go mute on a game but the game worked fine otherwise until quitting to XMB, which caused a reboot error. This has happened on previous Firmwares though so I wouldn’t just put it down to 4.0

I downloaded some demos from the store and that bubble problem did happen. Some disappeared for a time, and after resetting the console they came back.

I’m not sure if this is related or not but when I play MW3 online it seems to be fine but when I load up either single player or spec ops survival mode and start playing it seems to lag. I can almost time the lag to every 7 – 10 seconds while playing. It appears be be far worse on spec ops. It seems to be either a spike in FPS or maybe just too slow at reading the disc. I can’t pin point it but it is very annoying. I have tried different copies of MW3 on two different consoles. It was happening on my 60gb launch model then started to hard crash the console (firmware 4.00) I had a few problems with the console prior to experiencing problems with MW3 so decided to go out and buy a new 320gb slim. Set it all up updated the firmware to 4.00 and MW3 to patch 1.5. The console hasn’t crashed once but the weird lag while playing single player and spec ops seems to be there. Has anyone else noticed the game freezing while playing either of the two modes?

I’ve tried to change my hard drive last week from 80gb to 160gb but when I do, it says I got to re-insert the hard drive with the firmware update of 3.73 or above and blah blah blah. Really gutted and angry over this, anyone experience this or even better how do I over come it?

You have to download the newest firmware update from here ( http://uk.playstation.com/ps3/support/system-software/detail/item435771/Update-features-%28ver-4-00%29/ uk.playstation.com ) to a pen drive and insert it to your ps3 when you start it up with your new hard drive inside it. You need to make a folder on the pen drive and name it PS3 then make another folder inside that called UPDATE and put the update inside that one for the ps3 to see the data. Hope it helps you out. I think sony did this to stop piracy or something. The update size is only 180meg.

Ah! that explains things because i updated straight away only to try to play a psn game from my hard drive and it didn’t load at all, it just got stuck on a black screen…after a few minutes i had to unplug it because the on/off button didn’t work. When i turned it back on, i had to then wait about 20 minutes while the system checked my ps3 hard drive for errors. Nothing has happened like this before (appart from when i play skyrim and i get the odd crash every now and then but i just reset the ps3 and it’s usually fine but a game crash from a Bethesda game is normal lol) so i suppose it’s that update…..oh and the warning is getting annoying as well, at least give us the option to dissable it.
