Top 100 of 2012: 90-86 – Warhammer, Tekken 3D and FIFA 13

So here we are, ten down and an awful long way still to go. We’ve let Peter lose on some of the other articles we have coming up, so you’ll have to do without him on the Top 100 for a bit. Anyway, that’s more than enough of a pre-amble, lets get to the important bit – the games. Oh and if you missed yesterday’s part of the Top 100 you can catch it over here.

90 Awakened

– ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW –

You probably haven’t heard of Awakened. In fact you probably haven’t heard of its developer Phosphor Games Studios either. They’ve only got two titles under their belt, and one of those was a single mini-game from Kinect Adventures; SpacePop. The other is recently released iOS title The Dark Meadow, a survival horror game that looks fantastic and seems very creepy in a BioShock sort of way.

Phosphor Games are looking to make Awakened their first fully fledged console game, although it’s pretty uncertain whether or not it will make a 2012 release date. Back in January this year they were looking at a 2012 release, but we’ve seen little of the game since then. However, in November of 2010 they did release an early gameplay video and off the back of it I am completely sold on the game.

Essentially Awakened appears to be a class based shooter, but rather than your typical medic or soldier classes the game features a number of psychic abilities. So far they’ve shown a wide range from possession to stealth to creating tornadoes capable of destroying half a dozen police cars. Couple that with a solid looking third person shooter experience and Phosphor may well be onto a winner.

Here’s hoping we see it next year.

89 Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online

As with all MMOs it’s unclear whether or not Warhammer 40,ooo: Dark Millennium Online will actually make a 2012 release, and some places have already pegged it for 2013. Nevertheless it does seem possible that the game will hit in 2012 and therefore it earns a place in our list.

Dark Millennium Online will obviously attempt to try and trump its sister title Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning which, despite an initially strong showing, was stripped back to just six servers earlier this year in order to match the game’s dwindling player-base.

Dark Millennium is obviously set in the Game Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe, in particular revolving around the Sargos Sector, a place where reality itself is starting to come to pieces like a cheap jumper. Due to the sector’s unstable nature it had long been ignored by many, but now things have come to a head and the galaxy’s races are racing to claim it as their own.

Although the game is described as an MMORPG, it seems to play more like a third person shooter. The game will rely heavily on large-scale fire fights as well as cover mechanics and flanking. This title looks like it has potential, and even if it doesn’t make 2012 it’s probably worth keeping an eye on.

88 Tekken 3D: Prime Edition

The Tekken series doesn’t exactly have a proud history on Nintendo’s consoles, in fact when Tekken 3D hits the 3DS next year it will be only be the second Tekken game to appear on a Nintendo platform.  The other? Tekken Advance from all the way back in 2001.

The game is set to feature 40 characters so there’s a wide variety of beat downs available to the fighting game connoisseur, and aside from your normal one-on-one match ups a Tag Challenge mode is also included. If you need to take a well earned break from punching people in the face yourself then you’ll probably appreciate the 3D copy of the Tekken: Blood Vengeance movie that comes on the cart.

87 Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars 2

Another game with no confirmed release for 2012, but one we’re certainly hoping will make it. Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars has found a strong following here at TSA, and with good reason. The game boils down to pure, unbridled fun and is, frankly, completely crazy.

However, whilst we might love it seems that publishers aren’t quite as keen. When developer Psyonix confirmed that a sequel was in development back in March they expressed their frustration at being unable to sell the sequel to publishers, and were looking at alternate models of funding and distributing the game. So it’s coming and it might even hit 2012. Of course, equally it might not. The game seems a little up in the air right now but hopefully Psyonix will find a way to bring it to the public.

86 FIFA 13

Ah a safe bet, the only shock would be if there wasn’t a FIFA title released in 2013. Although not officially confirmed yet (does it actually need to be confirmed though?), there were small nuggets of information arriving even before the release of FIFA 12. Aside from the typical “We’re working on bigger and better things” kind of hyperbole that comes from pretty much all developers working on a series of this nature, EA have said they’re looking at including Kinect into the series. I’m not sure how well that would work really, but I’m willing to wait and see.

Beyond that… well it’ll be another FIFA game. With two FIFA titles in development, we’ve already seen FIFA Street feature in the Top 100, and the amount of new features we saw in FIFA 12 it seems unlikely that 2013 will be a “revolutionary” year for FIFA. That’s not to say it won’t change anything from this year’s version, but I’m not expecting much beyond a few tweaks to the game’s core engine.

Of course, no matter what they do or don’t change I still won’t be any good at it. However, as long as I can still mash the slide tackle button when I get bored I’ll be happy enough.

  1. FIFA 13 just doesn’t sound right :/ Although 12 has had quite a few changes they really need something new now.

  2. I’d say FIFA 13’s already announced because of EA’s announcement at E3 of FIFA 13 having full Move support

  3. WARHAMMER!!!!

  4. Didn’t know a SARPBC sequel was in the works. I hope they get to release it some day. SARPBC is most likely the game I’ve spent most time with on the PS3. Lots of fun with friends.

  5. 15 in and nothing big for me yet, though Awakened sounds one to keep an eye on.

  6. Im trying to hold off for FIFA 13 but i doubt i will there is also the Euro game and FIFA street

  7. Perhaps with FIFA 13 they could implement Kinect into be a pro and have you directly telling players to shoot or pass.

    • It’s more the voice features of Kinect, so I’m pretty sure It’ll be the in-game tactics, things that the D-Pad are used for currently like offside, attacking & defensive formations & maybe even initiating subs.

Can’t see what PSMove can bring to the table other than a separate ‘lite’ Wii-like mode

      • Move is fully capable of voice control, or at least the ps eye is, as demonstrated by Tom clancy’s endwar. I don’t get all the fuss about what kinect is able to do when ps3 did it years ago, they just choose not to use it as a feature for whatever reason.

As for saying your commands during a game, that’d be crap online as your opponent would hear what your tactics are!

  8. F’ing love SARPBC, without a doubt my fave title on the PSN by a long shot. Whenever I hook up with mates for a drink it’s always the centre of attention and for good reason.

Really looking forward to Dark Millennium too, especially if there are plenty of playable races/classes.

  9. SARPBC is so so good, desperately want a sequel but I can’t really see it happening any time soon. As others have said it’s brilliant fun at parties and it also happens to be my proudest 100% trophy completion.

    All-Star was a bitch!

  10. SARPBC 2?!!!!!!! :D :D :D
