The Last Of Us: “Monsters Aren’t The Focus”

Whilst it doesn’t yet seem like there was a great deal discussed at yesterday’s The Last Of Us press day in LA, at least the music score is now confirmed.

Naughty Dog’s upcoming PS3 exclusive zombie title will feature the work of Oscar-winning Gustavo Santaolalla, famous for his work on Babel and Brokeback Mountain.

The game’s creative director, Neil Druckmann, said Santaolalla is “awesome”, before playing the title theme to the assembled press.

“With this music we’re trying to get emotion. We’re not going for horror,” he explained.

“He picks and chooses what he works on; he could work on all these big movies,” he continued.

“We showed him the game, walked him through the whole story and what we’re trying to do, and he said ‘I want to be a part of this’.”

“There’s going to be horrific things happening in this game, but that’s not the focus of it.”

“The monsters aren’t the focus of it,” he concluded, “it’s the relationship between Joel and Ellie.”

Thanks, Eurogamer.

  1. Very much in the vein of I am Legend then as I suspected. I’m guessing a ton of suspense will be in order too.

    • And enslaved, that very much focused on the relationship between monkey and trip. The road too, that focused on relationship between the man and his boy. Lots of crossover between all these things it seems.

      • Quite true, still need to watch the Road, read the book ages ago.

      • If it’s as good as ‘The Road’ it’ll be a great game.

  2. this is really turning into something big…

  3. Well, good music is good. :)

I want to see how well they pull off this “relationship focus”, I don’t want a useless AI partner annoying me the whole game, but I don’t see how they can build a relationship between the characters properly if they allow co-op.

Maybe you play them one at a time? I don’t think the Uncharted partner AI would work, it was a bit too invincible to fit this game. I don’t doubt Naughty Dog will make it work, I’m just curious as to how.

  4. I was beginning to think that there was too many zombie games out there… but this is gonna be good!

  5. the more i hear about this game, the more excited i get
