Official PS Vita Sales Figures Roll In

We’ll spare you the commentary on what these two-day sales figures mean about the current state of the handheld market (for now) – suffice to say that the PlayStation Vita has officially sold 321,000 units in Japan, according to Famitsu.

For the record, and for the purposes of discussion, that compares with 371,000 Nintendo 3DS units in the same initial two-day period.

It’s not exactly the 700,000 shipped we were hearing, and a little disappointing given the Vita’s much better software line-up, but hopefully it’ll have a stronger launch in the west next February.

At least it sold more than the PSP, which shifted 166,000 in its first two days.

  1. Hmm well I guess compared to the PSP sales it’s done pretty well, this doesn’t seem like the most auspicious start the Vita could have had, personally the system/user limitations effectively turn it into a dud for me.

  2. Hope the sales pick up. I won’t be getting one til late next year and if it doesnt sell well then Sony may not give it loads of support.

  3. Didn’t you guys say they were selling out in an earlier article?
Sounds like Sony didn’t supply enough Vitas…

    • It seems on day one, they sold almost 85% of the Wifi-only Vita, and around 56% of the 3G versions. I wonder if there is a more specific breakdown of what SKU sold what?

  4. I’m guessing Sony were hoping were hoping for something closer to 500k sold, but still a solid start. Considering money is tight for a lot of people at the moment, especially as its Xmas, perhaps people are just delaying a purchase till early next year. I expect Vita to sell well each week though.

  5. i am very surprised to see it not sell as well as the 3DS the Japanese love their PSP’s so i thought the logical thing would be to buy the new one but obviously not :P

    • And the Japanese also love their DSs.

Just saying “very surprised to see it not sell as well as the 3DS the Japanese love their PSP’s” makes no sense. It’s been proven that, in that market at least, the consumer has preferred the DS for some time.

      • It does make sense as for a very long time PSP was king and I expect a slump in sales being due to the release of the Vita. Either way as soon as Monster Hunter is out on the Vita it will sell a hell of a lot more.

  6. Hmm, anyone else noticed this is an ESTIMATE, and in no way OFFICIAL sales figures.. does accuracy even matter anymore?

    • plus it is only 2 days means nothing really.
