Used Vita Game? Erase It Or No Trophies

As our Vitas slowly crawl their way over from Japan, real evidence of everything that was purely rumour and mistranslations is starting to emerge.  Like the inability for a Vita game card to be used by more than one person without some inconvenience.

[drop2]As you’ll see from the photo, the Vita unhelpfully tells you that you can’t earn trophies on this particular game, but doesn’t really explain why.

The truth is that if another Vita has played your game, it’s then locked to that machine and account, and you’ll have to do a factory reset on the card, deleting all saves, to open it up.

Of course, if you don’t care about trophies then sure – you can hop into the game and start playing without any more fuss, but given that the games store some data on them it’s obvious that something like this would have to happen to ensure people don’t get easy trophies just by loading a save game.

The message, of course, could be a little more user friendly.

I don’t like the way the Vita locks off the console to just one account – I think it’s hugely backwards after the openness of the PS3 – but I can see why this happens with the trophies.

  1. you know, i’m half expecting to read the vita will be region locked one of these days.

i’m still waiting to hear what features will be removed or crippled for the eu version.

  2. This is basically Sony finding a way to stop people buying pre-owned games that don’t have online on them. I’m not complaining because I’m not going to buy the games pre-owned. But if it starts properly like moves to PS3 and XBOX 360, then I can see lots of people forgetting about console games and just moving to PC gaming, especially seeing as how the games are cheaper, they’re much more reliable than the consoles.

    • PC games have CD keys too you know?

  3. …. I’m not following how this is a problem? Im pretty happy that no one lucks out and gets a shit load of trophies for loading a preowned game, and im very happy that i’m not going to have a game ruined by all the trophies popping up for me when they come on. The 3ds thing seemed like a massive issue that you can’t delete the data, yet this is exactly what you moaned about not having, and you moan again.

The reason things are locked and stringent is becuase of trophies, if people have trophies it will be massive blow to the psn and could damage it alot. If this really does bother you so much then happy days you don’t in facy HAVE to buy one :-).

    Negativity negativity.

  4. Through all of this – I don’t understand WHY devs/companies are trying to phase out used games for, it seems VERY unfair to people such as me (unemployed 3 yrs and counting :() who cannot really buy that many games new so have to rely on the used market. It seems in this climate companies only want wage earners to buy from them. ?!?!
