Gamespot Thinks Next Xbox Is Tablet Based

Gamespot, in their fancy 2012 ‘predictions‘ feature, are rumouring that the next Xbox will be tablet-based. They also think the hype train will be boarding much earlier than E3, when industry insiders think the new machine will be shown properly.

“The guts of the new Xbox,” says the report, “presumably some kind of insane multicore CPU and crazy powerful graphics chipset, will be teased nice and early as part of Microsoft’s final showing at the Consumer Electronics Show this year.”

Gamespot thinks that a further E3 reveal will mean that “we’ll see it in stores by the 2013 holiday season.”

“There are strong signs suggesting that, like with Nintendo’s Wii U, a tablet component figures heavily into the new design. That saucy Windows 8 Metro interface (now also seen on the Xbox Dashboard) just begs to be touched.”

“Speculation as to the form it will take has been rife for the past few months, with some even suggesting that the core of the new platform will be akin to a tablet PC that wirelessly connects to a base station, which in turn plugs into your TV.”

“If this is the case,” the predictions continue, “a premium Xbox Next setup could feasibly include a base station, a tablet, a conventional controller of some kind, and the recently discussed high-def evolution of the Kinect.”

  1. All sounds like a mess to me.

  2. No thanks. If I want a tablet I’ll buy a tablet, what I want is a games console

    • THANK YOU!!!
I have an iPad. I want an iPhone but refuse to pay the outrageous monthly service plans.
When I want/need an app, I’ve already got that covered.
I immediately dismissed the WiiU when I saw the tablet. They are not alt. controllers.
Sony was/is looking like my best option again.
Just hope everyone doesn’t screw the pooch on these next consoles.

    • Yes! If next ten is tablet based I will die a thousand deaths…

  3. What would be awesome (but probably impossible) would be for the console itself to be the tablet, with HDMI out for connecting to your big screen.

    • So a giant wired controller that uses a touch screen for controls?? iPad with AppleTV spring to mind?

    • Lol, way to describe the ipad 2 :)

  4. A bizarre idea. Good that they’ve suggested having a conventional controller alongside the tablet though.

  5. Maybe the new model of the Xbox 360 will be a tablet. That would be awesome.

  6. That’s not too difficult to swallow.. (badum-tish)
It might just mean use any Windows phone as an input device though.

  7. *Tablet sold separately

    *batteries not included

*visionary presentation may not match reality

    • lmao, also heat absorbing gloves not included ;)

  8. Gamespot predicts next Xbox is in fact a Wii U?

  9. I guess this time around Microsoft doesn’t want to be late to Nintendo’s party. They waited too long to get motion controls out of the door and now they go the Nintendo route from day one to close the gap? Interesting speculations indeed, with Windows 8 on ARM tablets around the corner. I personally think quite a few cool ideas could spawn from such a set up but it would be pretty pricey if it was included in the console package. I just hope that the tablet itself has a nice, sleek design, not like the Wii U magnadoodle controller, if it ever turns out to be true.

  10. tablets?! Forget that I want VR.

    • Seconded. And I want to feel more pain when playing games! (by that I’m thinking of the microwave corridoor in Metal Gear Solid 4, not a fez-wearing monkey that stabs you in the back when someone in Call Of Duty does the same!)
