Girl Fight is a new beat ’em up heading towards the PSN and XBLA this spring from Microprose, Kung Fu Factory and Majesco Entertainment.
The rather startling re-emergence of 90’s software house Microprose is – sadly – the least shocking part of the news. Let’s take a look at the press release.
- “Get Ready to Lick the Competition with Girl Fight” – There are only female fighters in the game so ‘lick’ implies that they are lesbians! Look, they even used a capital ‘L’ on Lick to emphasise the lesbionics.
- “With hair flying, long legs kicking and the ear-piercing shrill of deadly vixens.” – As they are girls they scream a lot, tug hair and have super sexy legs. This is more important than which martial arts they have studied.
- “Girl Fight is a unique all-female, fast-paced spin on arcade-style fighting games.” – No it’s not, Skullgirls is out around the same time.
- “Girl Fight allows players to choose from an array of sexy fighters.” – When was the last time you heard Capcom describe Ken and Ryu as ‘sexy’? Do Netherrealm refer to Goro as ‘Mr Totty’? No.
- “With unlimited funding and no moral or ethical compass, THE FOUNDATION collects its test subjects from all around the world, often abducting and plugging women into their virtual construct known as The Mainframe” – With limited funding and no moral compass Kung Fu Factory have made a game about kidnapping women, objectifying them and then making them fight for your entertainment.
There’s nothing wrong with a bit of T&A in a game, Bayonetta is a great example of a ‘sexy’ character. However, the press release for Girl Fight makes the game sound horrendously sleazy.

Bear Force One DLC will hopefully have two “members” slugging it out… helicopter style. There we go. Balance.
TSBonyman
helicopter style… LOL! :D

Cannot unsee mental image… *scratches out eyes*

So it’s perfectly fine to be sexist against women so long as you are just as sexist to men aswell, to ‘even it out’? Typical ‘equal’ rights idiots mentality.
Tuffcub
Who said that?
colossalblue
I think that if there was a similar emphasis on men, it would hint at an irony or self awareness rather than simple misogyny. Of course, no matter the balance or emphasis, this is always going to be a difficult line to tread. I think Tuffcub’s point is that they haven’t trodden that line very delicately.
Tuffcub
“Lick the competition” – Honestly I did a little bit of sick when I read that. It’s like bad porn.
mugsybalone
They also capitalized the ‘R’ in Ready, so it could imply all of the girls are ginger. The game is hair-ist, too.
Sympozium
I’d rather have a Queens Blade fighter.
YOURMUMANDME
You’re brilliant Tuffcub : )
PoorPaddy89
Never heard of Microprose, but sounds like they’re still stuck in the nineties.
mugsybalone
Ever heard of Geoff Crammonds’ Formula One Grand Prix? F19 Stealth Fighter? Civilization? Railroad Tycoon? All Microprose titles, big on strategy and simulations, in the 90’s. Oh, now I feel old.
PoorPaddy89
I’ve heard of the last two, though never played any of them. Then again, I was playing Croc non-stop until I hit puberty.
McProley
Didn’t they do the original X-COM too?
mugsybalone
Yeah, I think they did. Topical, considering the upcoming update.
McProley
They better be careful, we dont want them being accused of being “Alienist”!

Want further confirmation that it sounds sleazy?

That picture is neither sexy nor arousing, it’s just daft.
PoorPaddy89
It’s very strange. From the PR it sounds like a cartoony, hyper-boobage OTT affair. But this makes it look like it’s trying to be… serious? Which pretty much makes it worse.
KeRaSh
Looks kind of Tron-ish. I kind of like it.
RudeAwakening
Holy S*** are they for real!
Forrest_01
Netherrealm may not refer to Goro as ‘Mr Totty’, but i certainly do!
Phwooooaaarrr.
Jones81
AWESOME!!, move compatibity anyone?lol
Jones81
Way well turn out to be a load of gash!
BIGAL-1992
That press release looks like a complete mess. It makes the game sound very sexist on that alone.
