Dead Island is certainly one of those games that highlights the problems with trailers. I mean do you remember the teaser trailer? It was exciting to think a zombie title was aiming for so much emotional depth, and it really grabbed hold of the imagination. Of course, the game didn’t really come out anything like that, although the infamous family do make a cameo in the game.
No Dead Island didn’t really fall into the neat little niche created by their award winning tease, although it didn’t really fall into the standard zombie game category. Whilst the execution may have not been perfect, Techland were at least trying to set themselves apart in a genre that seems to grow more crowded by the day.
Although they’re worthy of praise for that, is the game itself worthy of any plaudits? Whilst we weren’t absolutely raving about it in our review, we hardly crucified it either. It sits at a respectable 7/10, meaning it’s certainly not worthy of instant dismissal even if it does feature its fair share of bugs and glitches. If you fancy knowing a little more about what we thought, here’s what we had to say about the game:
Dead Island is what you make of it. Sure, it might not be the game we were originally promised, but it’s still a lot of fun. The sheer scale of the island alone is an impressive accomplishment. There’s so much to explore, so many secrets to discover, and even more zombies to decapitate. There is no doubt that Dead Island is a good game once you look past all the glitches. It’s just a shame that Techland didn’t have more time to polish things up before its release.
Of course, that’s just our opinion and it doesn’t really matter all that much in WeView. Oh sure, our review still stands but now we want to know what you thought of the game; after all we’re not the only ones to have ever played it. Did you feel it was a fresh take on zombie killing? Did it have you smiling as you bashed in the brains of another undead nightmare? Or did you feel a little disappointed, only taking out zombies because you had to.
Whatever your feelings on the game you can let us know by simply dropping your thoughts in the comment box handily provided below. Whether you loved it or hated it we’re equally keen to know how you felt about the game. Once you’ve fully considered your opinion and written it out, make sure you give the game a rating as well. We don’t use a 1-10 scale here though, oh no. Instead just decide where you feel the games sits on the Buy It, Bargain Bin It, Rent It, Avoid It scale, and remember to drop it on the end of your comment.
Finally, don’t forget that you need to get your opinions in by Sunday afternoon at the very latest. Any later than that and we won’t be able to include it in the verdict article, meaning all your work will have counted for naught.

I have to say that although it does have its periods of ups & downs, I think this is a great game – It’s a bit like a more serious version of Dead Rising in first person format & with a slightly more realistic setting. Yes, there are times when textures can be a tad slow to load (I find this more so in the jungle than anywhere else), the speech can sometimes get a little glitchy if the game is loading something whilst someone is speaking (it never misses any speech, only repeats it sometimes) & there are sections of the game that feel like more of a slog than they really should (sewers anyone?), but apart from that I am loving it.
For me, it’s a bit of a mix between Dead Rising (zombies, modified weapons), Far Cry 2 (weapon degradation, luscious jungle, driving even feels the same/similar) & either Fallout &/or Borderlands (RPG elements, looting, quests etc). All of these things are good things to me. The Far Cry 2 thing was possibly the first thing that I noticed as soon as I jumped in a vehicle & it’s even more prevalent now that I am in the jungle. Well, apart from the fact that I am not getting constantly attacked at checkpoints each time I go past them (mainly because there aren’t any!). Oh yeah & there’s the zombies too, which if memory serves me correctly, FC2 didn’t have too many of.
It isn’t just you standard shufflers you will encounter in this game though, so you need to be on your toes somewhat – You have walkers, infected, thugs, suiciders, floaters, rams & butchers that you may have to face at any one time, plus the other human surivors that ‘don’t take too kindly to your type around these parts’. All require slightly different tactics to deal with & add variety & a challenge to the game.
I am not done with the game as yet (I think I am close to the final act), but what I have seen so far I have loved. Oh & if you like looting corpses of the fallen (which it seems i do!), you’ll find a lot to like here.
Buy it.

I can’t believe I didn’t mention Far Cry 2 – I also was reminded by it, particularly the handling of the vehicles.
I really must play the Ryder White DLC soon before I forget!

I was fortunate in that I did not get this until Christmas so it had a suitbale amount of bug-fixing patches. On my play through there weren’t really any glitches until towards the end, texture issues and such but I encountered nothing game breaking for me. The game is a good one, full of potential, a few good scares and decent atmosphere. Some of the weapons, when you upgrade them with mods, felt like they did not live up to the power the descriptions provide. There were some frustrating times but I still feel the good points won out. Very enjoyable, a little Fallout-lite and plenty of room for improvement. Well worth a try, especially with the offers on for it. Bargain Bin!

Oh, and sorry for double post but I must mention how much fun it is to just drive around running over zombies

I have a copy next to the TV, but I still haven’t felt compelled by it… I should give it a go really :’)
