Back in 2008, when the BioShock movie was first announced, plenty of people thought it would be a perfect fit. The world of Rapture and the mythos behind it was the best part of the game and that is something which could have been translated to non-interactive media quite successfully.
Unfortunately, it’s been a bumpy ride for the project’s development. In 2009, Universal told producer Gore Verbinski to trim back the budget before work was eventually halted in February 2011 because no studio was willing to back an R rated movie and Verbinski was unwilling to tone down the game for a PG-13 audience.
Verbinski said that BioShock was inherently scary and sanitising it for PG-13 would be missing the point. Ken Levine, Irrational Games’ boss, has talked previously about their being no need to make the movie so it seems that nobody is in a rush to get it done.
Now, according to IndieWire, the director who was signed on with BioShock is off the project. Carlos Fresnadillo told the website that “To be honest, by now, I’m completely out of that, and developing other stuff, right now it’s on hold. The studio and the video game company, they have to reach some kind of agreement about the budget and the rating”.

That would be Guillermo del Toro & he could probably get the splicers right as well as the tone, but the fact is that if they insist on this being PG13, it’ll be awful.
There’s simply too many seedy goings on in rapture to allow for PG13. Production companies need to realise that othen the subject matter alone means the film may not be suitable for all audiences, ragardless of rating applied.
As far as i am concerned, if a film ever made it out (which it looks destined not to), for me it would need to be at least a 15, preferably an 18.

yeh thats the guy didn’t know how spell his name but I think he would do this film very good. It would suit him, I don’t know if you ever seen Pan’s Labyrinth.
But yeh the age rating should be at least 15 or 18 the game itself is 18 so why not do the same with the film and make it a horror genre

Shame Verbinski isn’t tied with it anymore as he would have been a great choice for the film.

I think that this could work as a movie (unlike other games that are simply milked for the fanbase), but it needs to be done right.
“Verbinski said that BioShock was inherently scary and sanitising it for PG-13 would be missing the point”
That statement is spot on – Not only should it be downrighht creepy, but there should be themes of drug use, profanity & extreme violence, as is seen in the game. PG13 just wouldn’t cut it for me i’m afraid.
All the to’ing & fro’ing isn’t heping this come out though & i don’t think it’ll ever see the light of day now.

Both Bioshock games had an ESBN rating of 18. Why make a film thats a PG-13?

So Hollywood wants to do a film based on a game that is aimed at adults. Just do it as an adult film. I don’t mean porn, before any of you make that joke. ;)
They would be best off doing a CGI film as i can’t see them doing a good job of recreating Rapture in a live action film. Oh and i really hope Micheal Bay and Uwe Boll won’t be allowed to touch this as we don’t need Splicers to be aliens.
BIGAL-1992
Don’t give those two ideas.

I don’t see any reason why a set cannot be created to resemble (or even be an exact copy of) Rapture.
In fact, i am pretty sure it’s probably easier to make than it was to conceive!

I won’t be surprised if this never sees the light of day.
