Great PS3 Moments: The Day Trophies Appeared

It’s a week away from E3, and we’re expecting a couple of big things for the PS3 from Sony this year. To celebrate the fact that the Expo is on us once again, all week I’ll be coming up with great PS3 moments from the day the machine launched onwards.

Firstly, and one that’s certain to ring a few bells, is the day Trophies appeared.

[drop2]Unfortunately, because we’re poor and can’t afford to keep old content on the site, the images and comments around the post in question have long been removed, but the text remains – the My First Trophy post marked a big shift in what Sony were doing with the PlayStation 3 and I vividly remember that first ‘ping’.

“Sony, what have you done?” I wrote on the 2nd of July, 2008. “This is us now hammering through Super Stardust HD, again, because we now get Trophies!”

“You had to introduce the RPG element, the levelling system, the thing that’s going to make us stay up late, miss work, get into debt and lose our homes! It’s simple, but oh so clever, and we love you for it,” I added. I think it was very early in the morning.

It was perhaps a little over the top, but I adored what Sony did with Trophies – the levelling idea was really smart and compulsive, and it made me code up the web’s very first PS3 Trophy list. Sure, other sites do a lot more with them now, but it was so exciting at the time and even though I don’t have nearly as much time to game now, I still love that ‘ping’ sound.

The introduction of Trophies was a smart move from Sony – and even though the manual syncing is still a pain in the backside I still prefer the way it’s done over the Xbox 360’s numerical system – there’s a greater sense of achievement (if you’ll pardon the pun) every time you go up a level.

There have been many great PS3 moments, but I think perhaps this is the one that most here will connect with. Firmware 2.40 brought a few nice features (better upscaling, the ability to use some parts of the XMB whilst in-game and a neater PSN Store) but Trophies are great and took everyone by surprise.

Well, not everyone, but that’s a different article altogether.

More tomorrow.

  1. What a great day, it was a call re-start the already completed Burnout Paradise from scratch with double the enjoyment factor ;)

  2. It has been a while since I earned my last trophy… Now craving that sweet ping once again…

  3. I really don’t remember when Sony added trophies tbh. My first trophy accordin to my PS3 was in Midnight Club LA.

Also I don’t get the sense of achievement when earning a achievement on the 360 like I do with Trophies. I absolutely love the sound the PS3 makes when you get a trophy. I’ve only got two easy platinums though, COD World at War and MW2, was working on God Of War 1 and MW3 before BF3 MP consumed me.

    • You really consider CoD WaW plat an easy trophy?! It’s one of the hardest I’ve obtained. I got stuck on hard mode on the level where you have to move up to the steps of some massive building. That’s also the story of breaking my first cocontroller out of rage from dying so much on that level.

      • Agreed, I think that it’s one of the most difficult platinums out there to obtain, from what I’ve read!

      • GRENADE RAIN!!!!

      • Heart Of The Reich, I didn’t find it that hard, died 3 times in the first bit, stairs was easy lol.

Relentless and the third mortar pit on Burn It Down angered me though, I’m sure I died over 1000 times between those two missions. Actually it was a hard platinum………just remembered some of the harder trophies such as Sum Of All Zeroes!

  4. I freely admit to being a trophy whore. I love the leveling system, and comparing my stats to others on my friends list.

  5. Only mildly interesting trophy anecdote I have is when Tomb Raider was patched, as I was half way through playing it. So I now have trophies for all the events later in the game, but none for the beginning. (ie. I have ‘find 50 treasures’ but not ‘find 10 treasures’ or whatever the exact trophies are!)

  6. I remember when they patched warhawk and Bad company with throphys, went back and played them to the max to get some.

  7. Trophies completely changed the way I play games, all for the better. Games with a 10 hour story line but 30 hours worth of side quests now get played to their entirety, just so I can get the Platinum. It extends a games life span as well as encourages my addictive nature. Long live trophies.

  8. I don’t really care much for trophies, I know they exist & they good that they are there but I don’t go out my way to get them.

The games I love the most have a platinum next to them, all the God of war games, uncharted series (vita version is ass wipe) infamous 2, skyrim. Could have platinum heavy rain but dunno how many endings it has, ico couldn’t finish it in 2 hours

  9. Ah yes, my first trophy being in Uncharted 1 i think and my first Plat the ever brilliant Burnout Paradise.

  10. Since I first discovered trophies I have been quite into them. My first platinum was Burnout Paradise and soon after was Uncharted, both rather fun (although Crushing nearly crushed me)
I do like having them, and earning them gives me good satisfaction, and although the levelling system is better than the points system, I wish I knew for sure how many trophies I need to move up a percent. As u get to higher levels I believe it takes forever….
