Great PS3 Moments: The Day Trophies Appeared

It’s a week away from E3, and we’re expecting a couple of big things for the PS3 from Sony this year. To celebrate the fact that the Expo is on us once again, all week I’ll be coming up with great PS3 moments from the day the machine launched onwards.

Firstly, and one that’s certain to ring a few bells, is the day Trophies appeared.

[drop2]Unfortunately, because we’re poor and can’t afford to keep old content on the site, the images and comments around the post in question have long been removed, but the text remains – the My First Trophy post marked a big shift in what Sony were doing with the PlayStation 3 and I vividly remember that first ‘ping’.

“Sony, what have you done?” I wrote on the 2nd of July, 2008. “This is us now hammering through Super Stardust HD, again, because we now get Trophies!”

“You had to introduce the RPG element, the levelling system, the thing that’s going to make us stay up late, miss work, get into debt and lose our homes! It’s simple, but oh so clever, and we love you for it,” I added. I think it was very early in the morning.

It was perhaps a little over the top, but I adored what Sony did with Trophies – the levelling idea was really smart and compulsive, and it made me code up the web’s very first PS3 Trophy list. Sure, other sites do a lot more with them now, but it was so exciting at the time and even though I don’t have nearly as much time to game now, I still love that ‘ping’ sound.

The introduction of Trophies was a smart move from Sony – and even though the manual syncing is still a pain in the backside I still prefer the way it’s done over the Xbox 360’s numerical system – there’s a greater sense of achievement (if you’ll pardon the pun) every time you go up a level.

There have been many great PS3 moments, but I think perhaps this is the one that most here will connect with. Firmware 2.40 brought a few nice features (better upscaling, the ability to use some parts of the XMB whilst in-game and a neater PSN Store) but Trophies are great and took everyone by surprise.

Well, not everyone, but that’s a different article altogether.

More tomorrow.

  1. I don’t actively hunt for trophies as i don’t play games for trophies unlike a certain TSAer who admited to playing Hannah Montana just for the easy plat. ;) I have 0 plats and proud of it.

But i can see why some people whore er.. i mean hunt for trophies.

    • Proud of having no Plats? What’s there to be proud of??

      • I’m proud that i enjoy my game and don’t wh…*gets killed by a trophy hunter* :p

I just cba to spend 100s of hours trying to get a plat as it’s nothing to me. Imo.

      • But not every game requires grinding for plats. If you really enjoy a game you would go for a plat to get as much as of the game as possible.

      • Agree with OK there. :)

  2. Trophies are great though can sometimes breed poor gaming habits.

For instance, after beating Max Payne 3 I wanted to dive in again, but looking at the almost-impossible NYM/hardcore trophy, I really can’t be hassled with it.

Online trophies can also be a pain. Again, using Max Payne 3 as an example, reaching level 50 is going to take a fair few double XP weekends to get to.

  3. love the PING :)

  4. Best sound ever pinging a trophy ^_^

  5. I remember the side-effect of that when i’ve changed my HDD and installed GTAIV back and completed the game (i was on the final mission) i got nothing as the trophy patch did not register the save (it was made after the trophy patch but on an older HDD, i had to reinstall game data and subsequently re-patch it). That’s how i gave up on GTAIV :) (my first PS3 game)

  6. I remember loading up Burnout: Paradise, and being told that I would have to start a new save file if I wanted to get all the trophies. Was super annoyed at first, since I had completed a significant part of the game, but it turned out to be worth it, since it was the game I got my first platinum in. I shall never forget that moment :’)

  7. I love trophies
*Polishes his trophies* – What not football trophies PS3 trophies you say?
My first trophy was Super StarDust HD. My first Platinum was Call of Duty: World at War. Ah those were the great frustrating days……

  8. Let’s not all forget that we are going to be rewarded at the Sony trophy shop one day for all of our platinums and golds that we’ve earned….Wait no…erm! *cough* :P
