Star Wars: The Old Republic Taking First F2P Step?

Updated: Death to the rebel scum!

Having been playing SW:TOR since release it’s clearly quieter on the servers than it was. The game has already seen two big updates with Rise of the Rakghouls and Legacy that added new area, content and features. In the next month or two Update 1.3 will be released to extend the game even further.

Here’s the trailer for the update that was released a week or so ago:

EA’s E3 press conference has given us some additional information on what the update is bringing. There will be a new Operation called Terror From Beyond for characters to fight their way through.

Players will be able to choose a new race for their characters, the Cathar, and the game’s level cap is being increased. There’s a new PvP Warzone and a new planet, no doubt filled with missions and heroic areas.

Perhaps the biggest news though is that in July the game will be free to play up to level 15. No mention was made as to whether that’s a one month only deal or if it is a new permanent state of affairs.

Roughly speaking, levels 1 through 10 will see you through the missions on your class’s starting planet so you won’t get far into the Star Wars universe before you hit level 15 but it’s a great game and the community are very welcoming to first time MMO players unlike a certain popular fantasy MMO.

Update: Here’s the new trailer from the EA press conference.

i don’t know if this is the first step to free to play, it’d be great if it was.
but i suspect it’s a reaction to WOW doing something similar up to level 20.
