Tretton Talks PS4 – “It’s About Being The Best”

[drop2]Jack Tretton has spoken out about the PlayStation 4.

In an interview with Spike (and picked up by VG) the SCEA president remarks that it wasn’t about being first to market, or being the least expensive – but rather about “being the best”.

We think he’s a little bit wrong, but he’s the man who can.  “If you can build a better machine and it’s going to come out a little bit later,” he said, “that’s better than rushing something to market that’s going to run out of gas for the long term.”

He said that – ideally – you ship first, have the cheapest console and it’s the best one. But that’s not Sony’s goal – it’s to have the “best machine” and that’s the company’s current focus.

He’s still talking up the PS3 though. “This is the time when the value is the best and it’s my favourite part of the console life-cycle,” he said.

“We tend to have very long peaks and this is when you can just focus on building great games and letting the consumer reap that investment that they made by having great gaming experiences.”

  1. Already making an excuse for the PS4 to be later than the Xbox and more expensive?

    • Or playing mind games with MS?

  2. I just hope the hardware is solid and doesn’t suffer from any issues leading me to regret going in as an early adopter.

  3. I agree. Obviously some things better than Xbox and vice versa but Xbox has now run its cycle, it cant improve due to its limitations whereas the PS3 is still having a ‘long peak’ as Tretton puts it, with the hardware capable of improving gaming further still.

Being the best is what matters most for me and in my eyes they have achieved it over the long term in so many ways.

  4. PS3 hasn’t reached its full potential IMO, Uncharted 3 comes extremely close though.
It’s kind of pathetic to see that most multiplatforms, Assassin’s Creed, COD, Batman, GTA etc are limited due to the 360 and so the blu ray, the fast RAM and CPU become pointless in the PS3.
2011 should have been the year when developers chose to develop for the PS3 first and then the 360. At least the superior PS3 exclusives saved the PS3.

  5. Cue Jack Tretton singing and dancing along to the Pokémon theme tune

  6. Interesting….. I still think Ninty had the best games up to the dinky psone, since then Sony have had the best games and functions since…..it’s all in the eye of the beholder….
