Welcome To The New Look TheSixthAxis

Welcome to the new look TheSixthAxis.com. Usually, we change elements of the site as we need them, as ideas for new features and ways of making things look or work better occur to us. It’s modular and the change is generally subtle and not too much of a shock. But we have felt for a while now that it’s probably about time we overhauled everything again.

We initially kicked ideas around for this full redesign way back in August 2011, with various prototypes since then.

All of those abandoned attempts worked in slightly different ways and had different appearances but they all started with the same idea in mind: to modernise how TheSixthAxis looks and works, and to retain the ease of use through to all the most visited areas of the site.

We also gave considerable consideration to how we promote interaction from readers – we want your comments on everything, your participation in TSA Meets and your presence in our forums. We want you to share TheSixthAxis with your friends and join in with everything we do.

We think that this new look is cleaner, fresher and brighter than ever before and we think that we’ve retained the familiar navigational aspects so that it still feels like home. There are a few new elements to the site and there are one or two more to come in the next couple of days and weeks but at its core, TheSixthAxis still functions just as it has done.

Importantly, the site now fits much better onto mobile devices, in particular tablets like the iPad – you can still use our mobile theme but at least now the main site should work perfectly on the move. We’ll be making some additional tweaks in this area once the new style has bedded in a little, too, especially with respect to smartphones.

This month also represents TheSixthAxis’ fifth birthday. We’ve come a long way in half a decade, but we’re still independent, still staffed by volunteers and – unlike most sites out there – still absolutely focused on you, our most valued community.

Although we’re aware that it might take a little while to settle in for some of you, we’re confident that this new look will make TheSixthAxis.com even more enjoyable to use. Take a look around, explore a little bit and let us know what you think in the comments below.

  1. Looks great!

  2. Looks very slick from my mobile, good job! I reckon a feature on past TSA looks is called for.

  3. Fantastic! The site is looking so much better.

  4. Looks fantastic, well done!

  5. Wow, total shock, love it. Good work guys.

  6. Like the new design and normally it takes me a while to start liking new designs so well done :)

  7. Works great on IPad, old site design would slide left and right.
    Looks clean and fresh too!

  8. This all looks very cool, it’s overall a good overhaul with new fancey features. I like it. But I don’t like the thick bar of nothingness between the taskbar and the page contents. And maybe the bottom bar in black is a bit too thick aswell. But this is nitpicking and I’m pleased with the new look, even if I was shocked and bewildered at first. Good job.

However, as I write this I notice that the new font used on comments (and the one used in articles as well to a smaller degree, probably due to it’s larger size) is harder on the eyes than the old one, I find it more difficult to read.

    • Sorry for double posting, but I just noticed that the font looks good on my phone and slightly better in IE than in Chrome which is my standard browser. My PC resolution is 1680×1050, just in case that might help you guys check this out.

    • That white bar at the top shouldn’t be there. Looking into it.

      • I came to comment on that too, although the bar isn’t white, it’s black. On my ipad2 it’s about an inch thick and sit between the horizontal nav menu and the title of the article.

Otherwise a great looking revamp, much MUCH better use of screen real estate, particularly article text on an iPad. Two thumbs.

      • With me it’s blank as in see-through, not white or black. The God of War background shows.

  9. Love the new look. Nice job!

  10. Looks fantastic! ;)
