Willem Dafoe Beyond Rumours Squelched

Despite earlier rumours about Willem Dafoe joining the cast of Beyond: Two Souls, Quantic Dream’s David Cage has confirmed that the actor will not be starring opposite Ellen Page. Cage revealed that Dafoe wouldn’t be appearing when talking to Joystiq after a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, an event that I in no way, shape or form want to be at (that may be a lie).

Whilst my experience of Dafoe is based almost entirely on his appearance as Norman Osborn in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films, apparently he’s done work outside of the arachnid based superhero genre as well. In fact he’s done enough to warrant two Oscar nominations, for Best Supporting Actor in Platoon and Shadow of the Vampire, so his appearance in the game would have been quite a coup, but alas it seems to have just been a rumour with no truth to back it.

But that rumour? Well, apparently when questioned about the actor yesterday, David Cage simply said “Nice try,” and shook his head.

On a more positive front, Kadeem Hardison has been confirmed as appearing in the game. Hardison is apparently best known for his role as Dwayne Wayne on A Different World, a spin-off of the Cosby Show, although I can’t say I’ve heard of him or the show before. His IMDb does indicate that he had a one off appearance on the oft-overlooked sitcom Just Shoot Me!, something that earns him a lot of credibility in my book, amongst a slew of other work.

Hardison revealed he’ll be playing a paranormal investigator who “raises” Ellen Page’s character, although it doesn’t seem clear how significant his role in the game will be. Given that he appeared at a San Diego Comic-Con panel to announce his role it seems safe to assume it won’t just be a throw away character though.

  1. Willem Dafoe was also brilliant in The Life Aquatic, playing the complete opposite to his usual villain/tough guy roles. Ah well, it was probably a bit much to hope that he would be in Beyond.
In a way i’m kinda glad, putting such a high profile actor in a game might alter expectations for the rest of the performances in the game. Although movies and games share story-telling craft, more and more these days, i’m thinking an actor for a game doesn’t have that same connection to the camera/viewer and might not feel as in-control of that connection as they would prefer to be.
Not that i know anything about acting.. :) Still psyched for Beyond though!

    • And don’t forget The Boondock Saints! Awesome in there!

  2. the man played Jesus Christ for christs sake!

  3. I’ll be honest, “nice try” and shaking your head isn’t a flat out “no he’s not” – more of a deflection. But Kadeem Hardison? Yay! =)
