Do You Want Some Portal Lego?

Lego is one of the best inventions ever. Look, I’m not belittling wind up radios, sliced bread, hypodermic needles or Dyson hand dryers but Lego is just better. You could probably build a Dyson out of Lego and it would be instantly cooler because it was made of Lego.

Anyway, I’m letting myself be distracted. The story here is that a fan-led Cuusoo petition to get a Lego set made which is based on Valve’s Portal series of games has reached 10,000 signatures.

The magic number of 10,000 means that it will be forwarded for official consideration to the Lego adjudicators. Is there a more fun job title than “Lego adjudicator”? Imagine the talk at dinner parties. “Oh, you’re a doctor? How boring. Me? Oh, I adjudicate on Lego…”

So, the Portal Lego set, designed by “Team Jigsaw” who are Lego enthusiasts (who isn’t?) has got a shot at being made, if Lego’s mysterious panel of judges like it and Valve allow it to be made. Let’s be honest though, would Valve really say no on that phone call?

This Cuusoo voting system is what gave birth to the recently released Minecraft Lego so there’s precedent for game-based tie-ins coming through this system. There are still plenty of projects awaiting your votes too, if you want to spend the morning looking at imaginative Lego propositions. Anything that gets those cute little turret minifigs made is all right by me.

  1. Very cool, but it doesn’t look like that backdrop is made out of lego (parts of it seem to be) & am not sure why they didn’t just snap together some lego bricks for it – Sure it wouldn’t look quite as detailed as it does currently, but that’s all part of the charm isn’t it?

    • You sir, obviously don’t know your Lego :-p

Those would be the smooth tile Lego pieces for creating a slick surface.

      • That being the case, i think i would prefer it without them. Looks too manufactured rather than built.

      • & admittedly, the only bit of Lego i have actually seen for quite some years (other than the video games, which i adore) is the lex luthor figure i got free with my copy of lego batman 2.

Being 33 with no kids means that i tend to get accused of stuff if i go hanging around the aisles of toy stores.

      • but the clean manufactured look is what you expect in Portal though, at least the testing areas, the run down parts, not so much.

  2. I would buy that in an instant! I’m loving the turrets!

A Lego adjudicator, it’s what dreams are made of!

Good find McProley – I see your night shifts are paying dividends ;)

    • Yup, night shifts are keeping me busy! My CV is already on it way to Lego HQ for the Adjudicator job though

  3. I’m keeping money aside just incase! Looks awesome :D

  4. I do like the idea but to really ace this the sets should allow you to invent your own test chambers.

    • That’ll be on the back of the box, you know, the alternative things you try and make without the instructions!

      • Lol – One of those generally used to be just a lego man with an antenna on his head rather than hair!

  5. OH SHIT.

  6. Argh thought I had spent enough money with the steam sales, this will be another money sink hole for me lol. I do like Lego.

  7. That is epic! Portal and Lego! Whats not to love.

  8. Last time I saw a petition like this it was for Minecraft Lego. And it worked.

I will await with baited wallet.

    • Simon Pegg was trying to get support for a Shaun of the Dead lego set. Got the signatures but failed the adjudication due to the too adult theme. Shame really would have loved leog Zombie characters!

  9. the Minecraft one worked, phenomenally well, reaching it’s target in a few days if i recall.
i could see a Portal version doing similar.

they could make them so you could link them together like the Minecraft sets.

  10. This HAS to happen!
Think of the epic stop motion stuff some awesometastic person will create!
