A Quick Look At The Darksiders 2 Companion App

Developed by the same team who worked on Prototype 2’s iOS “sidekick” Darksiders: Soul Harvest is THQ’s latest attempt to spread word of its upcoming action/adventure sequel.

Available for both iPhone and iPad the app is completely free to download, weighing in at just under 33mb. Unlike previous companions before it, Darksiders: Soul Harvest isn’t just a page of Youtube links that comes tagged with a anaemic screenshot gallery, no, it’s certainly an interactive experience, though calling it a “game” would be rather misleading.

Making use of the platform’s GPS/mapping capabilities, Soul Harvest will pinpoint your current location before highlighting where other users have checked-in within your local area. Tapping on these checkpoints allows you to “harvest” souls equal to the number of check-ins at that particular spot. Scrape together enough souls and you’ll be entitled to a spread of Darksiders 2 goodies including wallpapers, a “Dungeon Guide”, a digital comic, and even an in-game weapon.

Unlocking these tid-bits can’t be done in a single sitting however. After harvesting three consecutive locations, players will be slapped with a 10-minute cooldown. Not only that, before you can redeem your digital prizes, a community quota for each unlock will also need to met.

There is one drawback however. Before you can even embark on your soul-scouring quest you’ll need to connect the app to your Facebook account. Despite the fact that updates and wall posts can be switched off from the get-go it’s still one more hoop to jump through and will no doubt frustrate those fans who aren’t up on the whole social-networking thing.

Soul Harvest is a smart albeit harmless little companion ideal for those who have been keeping an eye on the game. The interactive check-in side of the app is essentially user-driven marketing, but for most the pay-off will be worth checking back every ten minutes to harvest more souls.

  1. Getting really tired of all this tie-in app & facebook crap now. not only is it usually largely pointless, a lot of them don’t even work as they should.

Just give me the game & forget the rest. Ta.

    • too confusing for me. I’ll stick with the normal games that don’t have all this crap attached to it.

    • I’d be fine with it if it actually provided useful ingame information like maps, hidden object locations and stuff like that. It would be even cooler if it was able to somehow connect to your console and show your character’s current location. I guess that’s possible with the Wii U… :D

  2. Data harvesting?

  3. So that means I won’t be getting one of the weapons in the game I bought, because I didn’t use the free app? Well, that sucks.
