Ubisoft’s Uplay Changes For PC, Launches £1 Sale

You know what I was just thinking that we need more of in the PC gaming world? Game-launching digital distribution clients. I mean, Steam, Origin, Battle.net etc. just don’t add enough needless layers of obfuscation and system-resource drainage for me, I’d like another one.

Thankfully, Ubisoft has thrown its metaphorical hand in the air, exclaimed “me too!” with gusto and launched their own digital distribution, community hub and game launching client under their Uplay banner. It’ll do all the usual things that the others do, like using up memory that might allow that extra level of detail to be drained out of your system and getting hacked to buggery every now and then so you have to change your passwords regularly – all the usual services.

All snarky joking aside, I’m not sure this is going to be seen as a good thing by most users. What might just sweeten the deal, though, is the pretty decent sale that Ubisoft is holding to celebrate Uplay’s (re)launch.

You’ll be able to pick up Driver: San Francisco, From Dust, Silent Hunter 5 and HAWX 2 all for just a single pound each. On top of that, they’re heavily discounting titles like Anno 2070, Might & Magic: Heroes IV, Splinter Cell: Conviction and the Assassin’s Creed games by up to 75 per cent.

  1. Annoying and unnecessary, but I can’t miss out on Driver for £1.

    • Agreed, fella. From Dust and Driver will have my love sprinkled over them very soon.

  2. Shame it’s HAWX 2 and not the first one otherwise I’d of got it, number 2 isn’t even worth a quid. Will get Driver on Sunday though.

  3. I really like the U-Play feature on consoles. Its what everybody wants… to turn their trophies and achievements into a form of online currency to buy maps, modes and themes, as well as a way to keep ubi fans informed about all things ubi. Honestly I think it’s one of the few additions to gaming this gen that a publisher has actually gotten right. It’s had a very slow start but with ubi’s future lineup U-Play could become very popular. So a PC based version can’t be such a terrible idea.
And if memory is an issue people could always just delete some porn :)

    • Deleting porn? Never. Gonna. Happen.

This made me spit coffee through laughing. Such high hopes for the moral fibre of the core TSA membership…..dashed!!! LMAO

@Tef xdarkmagicians wise words as a comment of the week contender possibly? ;)

  4. Ubi is going to have a very hard time convincing PC gamers to install Uplay due to their treatment of them in the last 5-10 years. However, £1 on selected games is not a bad way to launch a service. But there is not enough games in the sale to get people to install it imo. Will be interesting to see if Ubi can rival EA’s Origin with this.

  5. No mac? Booooo. Driver for a quid is an absolute steal.

  6. so thats why my ubisoft games that didnt used to have Uplay now have it forced on them too…

  7. “Oh joy, another icon in my system tray”
That pretty much sums up my opinion too. I really hope Steam or Win 8 Store become the only place to go for games on PC! Win 8 pref, but i’d be happy with Steam! Just not Origin or UPlay – i’ll kick the cat!

  8. Not even From Dust for 1 Pound can bait me into using this service. I’d rather pay a little more and have it as a part of my Steam library…

  9. As much as this is a great deal at £1, its the main reason I don’t bother with PC gaming. All these memory sapping clients are ridiculous and not needed.

  10. Oh for feck sake, there should be only Steam, Gog and I don’t know Desura or Gamersgate don’t like these publisher specific stores at all.
