PlayStation 3 Firmware Updated To 4.40

Whilst it’s likely that we won’t be getting many more major firmware updates for the PS3 with the PS4 just around the corner, the gradual creep of firmware iterations continues today with version 4.40, available now for download.

There’s nothing official on any of the PlayStation channels yet, and there’s nothing obviously changed – at least at first glance – it’s probably just subtle “stability enhancements” as per usual. That SingStar icon’s still there, anyway.

Perhaps it’s related to recent custom firmware ‘features‘.

Update: Sony Japan at least has issued patch notes. Stability improvements and support for an NFC reader. Try to contain your excitement if you can.

  1. NFC reader? Intruiging.

  2. I’m pleased you mentioned the Singstar icon, in my armchair campaign to spread my distaste for it (exclusively in comments, and only on TSA) I’m always looking to see if firmware updates get it removed so I don’t have to put black ‘Singstar Hiding’ tape over the offending part of the telly. Sadly, today is not a day of victory for the Singstar’s Had Its Time campaign.

    • The Singstar icon is the new Cross Game Chat of firmware update questions. :D

      • It wouldn’t be a PR move if it was the case ;-)

Get everyone moaning about something they do have instead of something they don’t, ;-)

    • Just wear really big sunglasses Ron.
Well were at it i think we need a ‘please don’t show again’ option for anyone not epileptic who just wants to turn on a sony device.

      • Brilliant idea! Thats two pieces of merchandise for the Singstar’s Had Its Day campaign shop now. And yep, I’m fairly sure the epilepsy warning is pointless, a better warning would have been a sticker on the console that you could take off and treasure forever.

  3. Cross game chat?

I don’t have the Singstar icon on my PS3 but the kids have it on theirs…never could work that one out! I’m slightly scared of updating in case it appears on mine.

  4. I love the smell of an update in a morning.

    • I’d light a match if it’s a particularly heavy ‘update’ ;)

  5. Using an NFC pad could be interesting. Wonder what kind of interaction that may bring.

    • Skylanders.

    • It’s probably a credit card reader so they can take our money more easily!

    • Used game detection…. :P

  6. I wonder when the update for Gaikai is coming?

  7. Hopefully it helps my PS3 understand how to read certain BD’s!
Had bother getting new blu rays to play for a while, older ones work fine but FarCry 3, Black Ops 2 and Borderlands 2 all get error code 80010514…… :/

    • You need to wait for it to sober up. Didn’t you blow into it for an extended period whilst quite drunk? Haha

      • Hahaha, it’s clearly a lightweight!

  8. NFC reader accessory to make in-game microtransactions even easier perhaps?

  9. It’s more of a tape reader than a card.

  10. It makes you wonder what will happen to the PS3 once the PS4 launches. Current gen soon to be last gen consoles are going to get hacked to pieces once the firmware updates stop.
Hopefully this update will fix the down time the PSN has been experiencing lately, and the slow ass store. As hard as Sony works to convince me to spend my money on store items you’d think they would provide better service to actually take the money.

    • post update, the store is almost grinding to a halt for me.

    • They continue to support it, you don’t want to alienate the HUGE installment base of people having a ps3. They won’t sell that many units any way with with the economy like it is.
