Kojima has just taken to the stage at the Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco, complete with Joakim Mogren’s bandages wrapped around his head and a “Phantom Pain” t-shirt on. He introduced – still bandaged – the newest trailer for their latest Metal Gear Solid game. This trailer confirms that The Phantom Pain and Metal Gear Solid V are, in fact, one and the same.
For what it’s worth, the trailer which was purportedly all in real time (on PC), was as evocative, visually stunning and well directed as you’d expect. I’ve no doubt that it will be dissected by more studious eyes than mine in the coming days but the backing track alone (by Garbage) was quite stirring.
Kojima then launched into a gameplay demonstration, which again looked absolutely stunning (on PC) as a character voiced by Keifer Sutherland leads a weakened and injured Snake out of the hospital he just woke up in.
The Phantom Pain part of the story is to be a kind of prologue, with the Ground Zeroes part coming later in the game, with more open world elements.
The talk, on the Fox Engine and how it’s used, is ongoing so we’ll bring you any other major news that comes out of it.

So many questions. Who is the player at the very start of the trailer, because we’re looking through someone else’s eyes at Snake on the bed and Kaz (the guy awake on the hospital bed) asks “what about him” referring to the player.
Also at the end, is that a rock embedded in Snake’s head? Maybe a diamond?

Explaining any character from the MGS series would take up more words than I could fit into a comment :P. In the simplest terms, he is the guy in the sun glasses who looks like Wesker from Resident Evil. He worked with Big Boss to build Motherbase (the place exploding in the trailer) and later on trains Solid Snake. He is a friend of Big Boss, but he certainly has his own agenda often going behind Big Boss’s back making deals with The Patriots.

Ishmael is the guy with the bandages around his face and arm, but the going theory is that he isn’t even real so Kaz wouldn’t be able to see him if that was so which makes me think he is someone else.

You can’t have a Big Boss or Snake game without him voicing BB or Snake. You can’t! It won’t feel right without him.
I wonder if this is a trick by him or if they have yet to get him due to him working on a film?

Is it because the guy who voiced Big Boss in MGS4 is doing the job instead? That would make sense, seeing as he’s old and atrophied after his coma.
Oh and I’ve got a theory about the guy in the bandages, could it be The Boss’s son who got taken from her by the Patriots?

Not sure if you’re being sarcastic but there’s no harm in being considerate.
The theory doing the rounds seems to be that Richard Doyle will be doing the voice as Big Boss transitions to the baddie, though I’m not hearing it. Doyle voiced Big Boss and The Fury and both of those were largely loud booming voices whereas BB in the trailer sounds nothing like him as far as I can tell.

I don’t know anything about the MGS franchise. Honestly, it’s all a great mystery to me but damnit I really enjoyed playing 3 and 4 and I’ll get 5 the day it comes out.
It seems like they’ve put more effort into this trailer than others have in a full game.
The music was a perfect fit. Loved everything about this trailer. Now I just need to find out what was going on.
