Whilst Sony showed Knack running on the PlayStation Vita via the seldom-used Remote Play feature (above), it has emerged today that it’s likely that all PS4 games will be required by Sony to allow the Vita to control the action.
That’s according to Eurogamer, citing a trusted source.
On the PS4, Remote Play works by downscaling the 1080p video internally before passing it out over wi-fi to the Vita, which then returns controller inputs back over the same connection to the PS4.
There’s no penalty to developers, according to the report, so hopefully this rumour is indeed true and we’ll be able to play everything – Killzone Shadow Fall, DriveClub – on the Vita.
Expect more on this at E3 in just under two weeks.
Tuffcub
Well that’s bloody awesome.
bunimomike
Couldn’t have put it better myself. Wonderful news if true.
Broonba
Aye exactly…..that’s great news. :)
XisTG
Oh snap!

Anyone know whether this has to be over one wifi connection? In other words, can I buy a Vita, take it to the pub or hotel bar I’m in with wifi, & if there’s no one I know or no fit beermaids to annoy I can play drive club etc like a sad b*stard sat in the corner??? That’s as long as my PS4 and wifi is on at home?
The Avenger
It’s a possibility. PS3 supports remote play across Internet, so PS4 inevitably will. The only difference is we’re now talking about streaming moving image and syncing controller input too, but with the given Internet connection, and the gaikai tech it could easily happen.
But one does hope for the ‘fit beermaids’, or as I am a gentleman ‘women’ :P
double-o-dave
Cool, that clarifies that. I may treat myself to one if it works well. ‘Women’ always get suspicious when I act like a gentleman and think I’m up to something… They’re normally right! :)

Can be over the internet as far as I remember, although might be a bit laggy.
Youles
This is wonderful in theory, but I played Ico HD through remote play on my Vita and the slightest stutter from lag caused me to fail landing a particular jump, and thus fell to my death. I’ve not used it again since sadly.
Tuffcub
PS4 is going to be handling all they heavy stuff tho, looks like its something they took in to account when designing the hardware so in theory it should be much better than PS3 streaming.
KeRaSh
I think the functionality is greatly enhanced on the PS4. They said the PS4 even has some kind of Gaikai hardware built in to enable such feats.
Youles
I hope you guys are right! It was great until the lag, and then it was just game breaking unfortunately.
It would be a great way for Sony to sell the (Vita) hardware, although it might mean there won’t be a price drop anytime soon.
Tuffcub
They way Sony are doings things at the moment (ie right) I can quite easily see them bundling a Vita and PS+ with a PS4 for a bargin price.
parryman
I like remote play, this is very much good news
Dar-Kaus
I remember them talking about this feature back in February at the PS4 reveal and thinking if this is true, we’ll probably never have to buy another Vita game again.
KeRaSh
Please be true! This would be the single best thing about the PS4 for me.
DividSmythe
Hopefully this is true. It will shift allot moor Vitas and Ps4’s although I’m sold on both so far my self.
salvodaze
This is the best news a portable console gamer like me could hope for. Good move, Sony.

I wonder if the PS4 wil do the reverse as well, I mean play PS Vita games on the big screen? Maybe the digital versions could download straight onto its harddrive. Wouldn’t mind playing through Uncharted Golden Abyss on me TV.
hol
Be nice if that was the case, shouldn’t be no problem for the PS4 to upscale Vita screens?
Winkle
I know this may kill PS Vita sales but what if you could only do this as long as you had a PS Vita tied to your account/Ps4. That way you could play it out and about then carry on at home on the big screen.
hazelam
wouldn’t you still need to play the game on the Vita though, for the touchscreen and rear touchpad?
i know you could replicate the touchscreen controls on the DS4, but you wouldn’t be able to tell where you’re pressing.
and there’s no rear touchpad so any game that used that would be unplayable.
what i’d really like to see is a Vita that has a TV out option, they’ve got versions they use at shows that have that feature, there’s no reason they can’t release a version with that
