Going Hands On With The PS4’s DualShock 4

Sony’s brand new console also comes with a brand new controller – the DualShock 4 – and we’ve been testing it out across a variety of games over the last couple of days. Here’s a short video review of the DS4, going into detail about the new triggers, the improved analog sticks and the other features that really make the device stand out.

  1. i was never in doubt that the DS4 would be a quality pad, that’s one thing you can definitely say about Sony’s official pads, they’re always high quality.
well, the sixaxis pad wasn’t up to their usual standard, but the DS3 was definitely a return to form.

could you tell if you could click either side of the touchpad down separately, because i remember reading a rumour that you could to provide similar functions to start and select.

it’s funny though, i’ve never had a problem with my hands slipping off the trigger on the DS3, and i have sweaty hands.

it’ll be interesting to see what uses devs put the touchpad to, i’d imagine a magic game where you have to draw symbols to cast spells.
i could see Molyneux making use of that if he ever made a PS4 game, the Black and White games used gesture controls.

    • Molyneux’s new game was announced recently for the PS4, its called ‘The Cube Reloaded’, the catch is players have to rebuild the cube by drawing cube gestures’ on the DS4 touchpad! :P

  2. Is it just me or does it look smaller than the DS3?

    • It looks skinnier.

      • It’s more ergonomic, they’ve smoothed away some of the ‘bumps’ of the DS3 .. around the shoulder buttons and sticks.

I think it looks great and i think the wider spacing will be a comfier fit for my old paws. Thanks for the video guys, bring me back a booth babe .. ;-)

      • IGN has a video of the DS4 with a DS3 next to it. It slightly wider and the hand grips are at a lesser angle which makes it look skinnier.

  3. Really looking forward to trying the DS4. It looks pretty.

  4. As soon as I saw the DS4 back in February I pre-ordered one, there’s a nice shiny-matt black box which comes with it.

  5. Would you know if the color bar has the ability to change color? All i’ve seen is that blue.

    • Yes, it goes all sorts of colours. I’ve seen green and red a lot but I think it does pinky-purple too. Basically just like the Move orb.

      • ‘Ive just watched the video for the second time, and realised my stick stiffness query was answered by your good self Peter glad there a bit stiffer. ;)

  6. Really happy with the look glad they changed those triggers hope the sticks are a little bit stiffer if not no biggy.

  7. Pretty surprised how small it is compared to initial pictures shown and imagining it’s actual size and then seeing the controller in someones hands. Looks brill!
