Get Banned From XBL, Lose Access To Your Xbox One Library [Updated]

Update: It’s quite astonishing some of the misinformation and confusion which is flooding out of Microsoft’s PR team these days. There’s a puzzling haze over pretty much everything which is being said about the upcoming Xbox One, with the latest being the status of Xbox One games, should you be subject to having your XBL account banned for various misdemeanours.

The original tweet and Jim’s post are preserved below, but we now have something of a retraction from Microsoft, as the Xbox Support team, @XboxSupport1, replied to the inevitable backlash tweets they had stirred up:

So, they weren’t talking about the Xbox One, and instead about the Xbox 360 situation. Except that this isn’t stepping away from the brink, but rather sidestepping the issue for a few days. There’s still the possibility that XBL bans might well result in losing access to your games, but we just don’t know yet.

Can someone get the PR team an all-encompassing fact sheet, for next week?

Even after the initial Xbox One reveal and Microsoft’s stellar E3 press conference, there are still questions about the company’s next-generation console that remain unanswered.

One topic that did receive some closure, however, was that of Xbox Live bans. As we know already the Xbox One requires a daily connection to the internet and games can only be played on the console if the user owns a license.

When asked whether a consumer’s access to their licensed products would be revoked if banned, Xbox Support replied with the following tweet.

So there you have it; involve yourself in any form of online mischief and kiss goodbye to an entire library of games.

Though there are only a minute portion of online users who partake in such activity, what would be the ramifications if users were wrongly/mistakenly banned by Microsoft? Needless to say it’s a slippery slope and only gives savvy consumers another reason to pledge themselves to the PlayStation 4.

  1. The 360 clarification doesn’t change much, because there’s no such thing as buying a retail disc game for the Xbox One.

    The only thing you can do is a buy a restrictive licence for a digital copy that’s shipped on discs through retailers (rather than via XBLA)

    If you’re banned through genuine reasons or via a mistake or because everyone reported you for cheating when you owned them in multiplayer then probably not only will you lose access to your games purchased off XBLA, but also your disc licenced games.

  2. I was banned from PSN for having the name FLUFFYB1TCH and lost 19 platinums. I am still recovering for the loss of my trophies and shed a tear each day :( If I lost all my downloaded games I don’t think I would be able to play a game ever again

    • Damn, that’s terrible to hear, and so harsh. Surely a warning and option to let you transfer all of your trophies and PSN data to a different PSN account name would’ve worked much better. If that wasn’t possible, they should’ve let you keep the name.

      Hopefully these trivial bans are sorted out with PS4 and X1.

  3. Microsoft really aren’t doing themselves any favours here. There are so many mixed messages and fumbles on their part… it’s embarrassing.

    What we need is a clear and concise FAQ or factsheet. Until then, internet users will continually manipulate what the company has already said and glaze it with a thick coat of forum flaming and memes.

      So they havn’t actually said wether it does or not. Again. Never seen a PR team be so horrifically bad at their job

  4. They might have backtracked now, but after all the other things they denied that turned out to be true, this probably will be too. Only way ‘offline’ play (Tentatively call it offline) can be achieved is have access to the 24 hour check in, but nothing else. And knowing the fuckwits that designed this system this won’t be the case. The news just gets worse

  5. Absolutely don’t believe this is in response to the 360 at all. Ridiculous backtracking.

    • Neither do I, the first question CLEARLY states “Xbox One”

      • Also their link to Terms for Xbox One doesnt cover his question at all, so no answer has been given.

    • Microsoft are being clever. All the Awkward they don’t want too get bad pr from they just give confused and contradictory answers for. They can then do as they wish down the road.

  7. til I looked at the draft which had said $9496, I did not believe that…my… mother in law was like they say actualie taking home money parttime from their computer.. there uncles cousin has done this for only about seven months and just repayed the loans on their home and bought themselves a Peugeot 205 GTi.
