Sony Issues Q&A On Firmware 4.45 Bricking Problems

Whilst the PlayStation Network has been up and down over the last hour or so, earlier today (or, rather, in the middle of last night) Sony pushed out firmware 4.45 for the PS3. All was well – hey, it lets you remove Trophy notifications – until consoles starting getting bricked, with TheSixthAxis members among those affected.

Sony pulled the firmware update, but it was too late for some.

If you’ve been affected by the problems and your PS3 isn’t functioning after the update, Sony have some news for you. It’s not conclusive at all yet, but they are aware of the problem and they are working on getting things sorted. Will you get your PlayStation 3 back? We’ll have to wait and see.

Here’s the Q&A:

Q1. I updated my PS3 to version 4.45, and now the XMB is not being displayed and I cannot play anything on my system. Why?

We are currently conducting investigations to determine the cause of this problem. We will announce further information, including additional updates, when ready.

Q2. Version 4.45 has been taken off line, but if users have already updated to the new version and they are experiencing problems, what can they do?

We kindly ask PS3 users to wait for further details. We will announce when ready.

Q3. Were you not able to predict that such an issue may occur? Do you perform appropriate verification tests before releasing updates?

SCE constantly performs appropriate verifications tests for system software updates, and strives to improve and offer quality service.

We are currently conducting investigations to determine the cause of this problem. We will announce further information, including additional updates, when ready.

Q4. I read in the web that the PS3 system with 500GB HDD were affected. Is this true?

We are currently conducting investigations to determine the cause of this problem.

Q5. Have you already found a solution to this problem?

We kindly ask PS3 users to wait for further details. We will announce when ready.

Q6. How are the customer service teams responding to consumer inquiries right now?

We kindly ask PS3 users to wait for further details. We will announce when ready.

It does sound like Sony were caught unaware on this one, which is slightly troubling. Hopefully they can now find a workaround for those affected by the bug, which has rendered consoles completely useless. It’s – ironically – worse for those with PlayStation Plus, as Plus would have already downloaded the update.

The PSN appears to be back up and running now, in related news.

  1. I kindly ask TheSixthAxis members to wait for further details. I’ll announce this comment when I’m ready.

    • ” worse for those with PlayStation Plus, as Plus would have already downloaded the update.”

Not at all, as it doesn’t install it, and when it was pulled from online, was smart enough not to install the downloaded update.

      DO YOU EVEN OWN PLAYSTATIONS?

      • Do you own a braincell?

      • Mine had downloaded the update but as they’ve pulled it the console won’t let me update even if I wanted to

  2. Well this Q&A don’t address anything what so ever, they not answering anything. Way to blow your good week Sony

    • First I’ve heard about it lol

    • Hardly….

I don’t know of a single people in the real world that this affected.

      What Sony need to do:

Release 4.40 as 4.46, make it clear it’s just a version bump of the old version, this will get the handful of affected users running again, then issue 4.47 when it’s been fixed.

  3. That could be the worst Q&A i’ve ever read.

    • Please kindly wait for Sony to verify if that was the worse Q&A ever.

  4. That Q&A is amazing.

  5. That is by far the most pointless Q and A i have ever read! You would get more answers out of your bricked PS3!

  6. This isn’t Q&A. Its a Q&We kindly ask PS3 users to wait for further details.

    • ^Give this person some of my points for making me chuckle! :)

  7. To be fair at least its a quick response. Yes its not much info (if any), but theyve come off worse for not releasing statements with similar issues in the past.

  8. PS+ has already downloaded 4.45 on my PS3 but i expect when they release the fixed version it’ll be named 4.46, so it should override – and overwrite – the suspect 4.45 update which is waiting somewhere on my hdd.

Terrible Q&A, they do seem to be at a loss but hopefully they’ll figure it out soon.

I think i’d better grab an external hdd and do a backup just in case..

    • When I switched my PS3 on there was a notification saying that the 4.45 update had been downloaded but when I looked for it, to see if I could delete it, there was no sign of it. When I selected the update icon I was told I had the latest version.
Sony must have added a bit to the PSN log in to get rid of it for PS+’ers.

  9. I few people on my PSN List said they did the update & they seem to be ok. Very strange. I missed it thank god the update, hmm like i seem to miss any of these things that people say that go wrong so maybe i must be lucky then LoL:D

  10. I think they meant to write “would you kindly wait for further details”. (think Atlas)
