PSN Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Gamers To Get A Refund

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has been beset with a number of problems at launch, most notably the servers being overwhelmed by the huge amount of gamers trying to log on.

Two days after launch Sqaure Enix halted all digital sales whilst they addressed the problem and said they are “working to expand our server capacity in the coming days.”

Whilst they are tackling the problems Square Enix have extended the trial period of the game for another week and now SCEE Blog Manager, Frank Dutton, has posted the following message on the EU PlayStation blog.

All customers that purchased the digital version of the FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn Standard Edition, or Collector’s Edition, from PlayStation Network on 27th or 28th August will receive a full refund and will be able to find the funds in their wallet as soon as this is processed.

In addition, the entitlements of FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn Standard Edition or Collector’s Edition will be reset and the title will appear again in the download list.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience.

I don’t wish to single out Square Enix as many have used the “we didn’t expect this many people to buy the game” excuse recently (looking at you, Sim City) but this is becoming rather tiresome.

  1. To be fair I can understand them being conservative on player numbers given how massively FF XIV 1.0 bombed.

The way I’m reading it people will be getting a full refund and keeping their copy of the game? Good on them.

  2. You’d think they could get a rough idea of the demand by pre orders so they could get an idea of the servers needed. Nice gesture to give a refund though.

  3. This game just can’t catch a break, can it? Even the re-release suffer from problems.

  4. It is not the server problems they are dishing out the refund for.

It is for those people who have been left with a defective copy of the game as documented here:

    http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2013/08/30/final-fantasy-xiv-eu-psn-version-reportedly-not-working/

  5. The newest client update, which was about 750MB helped a lot. The log in problems are resolved and it seems like the game plays now much better (less lag and freezes). SE are really working hard to make this game shine and so far (for me) it works.

    • Thats all well and good but the damage may already have been done.

      • I don’t think so. You could say the same thing about the failure which the initial FF XIV was and still the amount of players interested in FF XIV:A Realm Reborn is just astonishing. Plus: there aren’t any fantasy MMO alternatives on the PS3, the time period right now is free of the monthly charge (big amounts of players logging in to be expected) and it’s not that it was completely unplayable – there were some difficulties, but not critical ones.
