Killzone: Shadow Fall Download Is 50GB, Guerrilla Working On New IP

Sony have assured gamers that it is doing everything it can to make next-gen downloads as painless as possible, including the whopping 50GB file for Killzone Shadow Fall.

“There are big innovations in the PS4 to make it more attractive and more easy gamer wise to want to download,” said Sony UK boss, Fergal Gara. “The Play as you Download functionality, for example, means you don’t need the whole file before you go.”

“This is a little bit counterbalanced by the fact the files themselves are getting bloody big. Killzone: Shadow Fall is an uber file – I think it’s cracking on for 50GB. It looks it, too, when you see it.”

The game is being developed by Killzone veterans Guerrilla Games and they have told Eurogamer that for their next project they are leaving the Helghast behind and creating a new IP.

“As a studio we do want to branch out, and we have started work on a new IP, something completely different to Killzone. I don’t want to say anything about it right now, but as a studio we do want to keep it fresh,” explained lead designer Eric Boltjes.

I can’t see Killzone being killed off completely but it’s understandable that Guerrilla want to work on something new.

  1. Hurrah for new intellectual properties and physical media!

That 500GB HDD is looking tiny now, an upgrade will be required.

    • Especially with PS+. My PS3 hard drive has everything I own downloaded on it and I’ve got about 150gb of my 1tb drive left…

As soon as we know what size drive the PS4 takes and what specs it needs, I’m ordering the biggest drive possible. Hopefully that will be before release day!

  2. You’d better hope you have an internet connection with no download limit when the PS4 comes out ;-)

    • Or just buy the disc. I hear that’s what they used to do in the old days.

      • The popularity of digital versions is already on the increase, not to mention digital only titles, and a lot of people may run into awkward situations if they have limited downloads.
Obviously not every game is going to be 50GB but it’s an indication of the sort of increase in for size that may be expected.

  3. We gonna need a bigger boat…. I mean Hard Drive =P
I rarely download a full game unless its free! I have a 320gb PS3 slim but only have 10gb of free space. Yikes!

  4. As Mik says, many ISP providers have a download limit, not to mention many people who have slow net (I only get 800kb/sec) – this does concern me when it comes to Playstation Plus content :/

  5. Even on my fibre optic I only get max 13mb/sec on steam and it’s usually much slower on the PSN. Physical purchases are here to stay with those file sizes.

That said, some of the best looking PC games I own are between 8-13 GB, why are these sizes so much bigger? PS4 looks pretty but my laptop has higher spec and better graphics.

    • that’s due to Wireless G in ps3.

      And PSN’s slow network.

Hopefully ps4 is better. On my fibre on wireless-n my vita downloads slow.

    • Sizes may be bigger because of original Blu Ray format: Textures may not be compressed on the disk so may not be for the download version. Just a guess.

  6. I think we all need better broadband speeds before downloading 50GB files is anything more than a chore (& for some an entire day allowance!).

  7. 50GB? Holy mother of god. This is ANOTHER reason why I don’t bother with downloading games still.
    1. they cost more
    2. have problems and don’t look as good as physical media (GTA V)
    3. ridiculous size of games to download
    4. broadband not up to it in the UK

Once they sort that, then I might think about it. Until then, physical media for moi

  8. Meh, until the digital titles are priced fairly, something I no longer expect to see in my lifetime, I couldn’t care less for the size as I’ll buy the physical copy :)

  9. It’s probably a good thing that the early PS4 PS+ games are likely to be indie titles (apart from Drive Club). That hard drive will get eaten up in no time at all otherwise!

  10. New IP is great, especially in their hands….

However as a Killzone fan I do worry the support / expansion of KZSF will be near non existant like KZ3….

Though I have some faith that with the PS4 and launch title reqs out the way (which I believe killed KZ3), GG will actually support the game….

Just Sony please do not bring out at PS5 now for the next 10 yrs..lol
