WeView: The Last Of Us

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that The Last Of Us came out on top of last week’s WeView poll. The game scored very highly amoung critics, with it storming to the top of the UK sales charts in June and holding the top spot for the following six weeks.

The Last Of Us emotionally moved me in a way very few games have. Without revealing too much the opening level, even after only a handful of minutes with the game, left me heartbroken and shedding tears. The Last Of Us was a heart wrenching experience from start to finish – Naughty Dog created a masterpiece in my eyes.

Alex reviewed The Last Of Us for TSA, and scored the game a 10/10. He described the visuals as “some of the best this generation of consoles has ever produced”. Alex was also quick to praise Gustavo Santaolalla’s accompanying soundtrack saying “it fits the game so well it’s hard to imagine it without it.”

His conclusion, albeit quite a lengthy one, perfectly describes The Last Of Us for me:

“Joel and Ellie’s story is a sprawling, often desperate struggle for survival against insurmountable odds and a series of increasing bad rolls of the dice, and it’s expertly told.

But there are moments of beauty in the tale, both physically and emotionally, between a mismatched duo that end up relying on each other far more than either thought they might. The bright moments are overwhelmingly powerfully so, the innocent ignorance of Ellie’s upbringing slotting perfectly between Joel’s dark, barbed decades of his own private hell, and those they meet on the way.

There’s one fleeting, momentary respite near the end of the tale as Ellie stares out onto a rich green field, Joel at her side. It’s quiet, poignant, delicate and shows an element of nature untouched by the disasters around it. A reminder that not all is bad, not all is lost, and, after everything that’s happened, it’s hard to fight back the tears. These things you can’t help but carry with you long after it’s all over, and few other games can have that kind of hook, that kind of reaction.

The Last Of Us does. Several times. Just be ready.”

Now it’s over to you – pop down your thoughts in the comments below and don’t forget to give The Last Of Us either a Buy It, Bargain Bin It, Rent It or Avoid It rating. I’m expecting a large response for this week’s WeView so make sure to comment by Sunday evening if you want to be included in Monday’s verdict article.

  1. Buy It – Its a classic and an IP I hope returns. Great tense combat and a feeling of peril I have not felt in a game since the early resident evils. Not quite my game of the year but one of the best.

  2. Definately one of the best games of the seventh Generation, Buy it!

  3. Buy It! One of the greatest games this generation.

  4. The Last Of Us is a truly memorable game-one in which I will not forget in a hurry. It succeeds on many levels-whether it is visual+game design to its brilliant sounds from gunshot echoes to the different pitched noises of the infected.

The story is the bread and butter of the game. While I do question the ending somewhat, it still resonates with me as I would have chosen differently. But gripping and endearing, it captures a magnificent tale in a disparate land.

Add in a solid multiplayer and TLOU is one of the best games released on the PS3 even exceeding the Uncharted series. Definitely my game of the year so far so of course, it is a buy it from me.

  5. Buy it. Personally I havent played a better game. Was astonishing!

  6. Buy it for sure. this is a game you should not miss.

  7. GOTY hands down, this game blows out GTA & BioShock. I loved every bit of it, the jokes, the love for Joel & Ellie.

The only thing I wished was survivor to be hardcore but just like UC it wasn’t hard enough to be challenging

    Buy it

  8. I’ve only got it in the last couple of weeks and still have about a quarter to go but even if it ended now it would be a Buy It.

The characters, soundtrack, controls, graphics… everything is just about as good or better than any game out now. It’s games like this that make games a more credible medium. I see a lot of films (over 80 this year at last count) and I wish a fraction had the qualities found in the Last of Us. It brings out all your emotions. Clickers in the dark are pretty scary when you can hear them coming, can’t see them and know they will kill you. It’s also incredibly sad in places.

I’m hoping for a great finale but for the moment I’m glad I’m playing it on hard as the game is lasting just that bit longer. I’ll be a bit sad once it’s finished.

  9. It’s simply the greatest game ever made. By some distance.

Buy It, but be warned- it will ruin other games for you.

  10. Finally picked this up for an acceptable price and just started it last night. I can already see what all the hype is about and can’t wait to dive back in tonight!
