Nintendo To Allow Console Crossplay

Nintendo has confirmed that it will allow developers to create cross-play between its own consoles and those of competitors.

“We can confirm that Disney Infinity from Disney Interactive Studios, Cubeman 2 from Three Sprockets and Pure Chess from Ripstone, all have the ability to play on Nintendo systems,” a Nintendo rep told VG247. “While at the same time communicating with consumers using those same games on other systems. Additional games using this functionality are in development.”

The first game expected to play across all platforms will be Pure Chess. “You can have other console players playing against Wii U players. You can have smartphone players play against them. No problem,” explained Phil Gaskell, creative director and co-founder of Ripstone.

Soon we may see Wii U vs. iPad vs. PS Vita battles but there will be two consoles left out of the party, Microsoft keep the Xbox Live network locked down tight.

  1. Good guy Nintendo.

Now if only the proper consoles would do this :p

  2. Cool, it would be great to see that feature industry-wide.

  3. Never knew Sony had ok’d cross play to none-Sony devices.

    • I played the entire co-op campaign of portal 2 on PS3, while my brother used his Laptop. Sony have done this before so it’s good to see Nintendo joining the party.

I think it’s time now for the console big boys to allow multiplatform titles have cross system play.

      • Playstation vs Xbox would be really good, and it would double the players on less popular games. I doubt it’ll ever happen though.

      • My gaming friends are split across Xbox, PS3 and PC and it drives me mad that we can’t all just play together. It makes sense between consoles and PC as the controls are typically very different and could offer distinct advantage to one or the other. The differences between Microsoft and Sony controls, though, is so minimal it really wouldn’t give either the advantage.

If Sonic can appear in the same game as Mario, maybe it’s time we all join hands across the platform divide.

  4. That is pretty cool. Hopefully this takes off. Would be cool to have some special weekends with platform competitions. PS Vita vs 3DS only matches and stuff like that.
