Middle-earth: Shadow Of Mordor Announced For Next Generation Consoles

Warner Bros. have just announced a new game set in Middle-earth, dubbed Shadows of Mordor. No link to The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit is mentioned, other than the fact that it’s obviously shares the same setting of Middle-earth.

It’s a third-person action game which “explores an original story of vengeance and redemption” as you take the role of Talion, a ranger whose family is killed on the night Sauron and his army make a return to Mordor. After his own death soon after, Talion is resurrected with Wraith abilities, vowing to venture to Mordor and destroy his foes. This will lead to a quest involving not only the meaning of Talion resurrection, but the origins of the Rings of Power themselves.

“In Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, players will explore the dark and very personal theme of vengeance in a world where decisions have a consequence, and those consequences persist even after death” said the VP of Production and Development at Warner Bros. “The game introduces new gameplay mechanics to the action genre, creating opportunities for emergent and customized gameplay that will be rewarding for players.”

Enemies are unique in their personalities, and archenemies will remember and adapt to the situations offered with the game’s Nemesis System, so each player will have a different experience.

The game is developed by Monolith Productions (who previously worked on MOBA Guardians of Middle-earth) and will release on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as PC.

  1. Tolkien games never get the developer and budget they deserve. That MOBA was pretty crap from a technical point of view as far as I can recall.

    • I’m not sure that’s entirely true, Lego Lord Of The Rings was fun, but admittedly I haven’t hugely enjoyed a LOTR game since Return Of The King on the original Xbox.

      • There’s those two and Battle for Middle Earth 2 making up the good ones. But one is a Lego game and the others many years old. Return of the King was awesome on the old Xbox… Good times.

  2. Desperately want this to be good. Return of the King on PS2 was one of my favourites in recent times.

  3. Sounds good, playing Return of the King co-op with my mate was one of my fondest PS2 memories, so if its anything like that it will be awesome.

  4. Sounds very interesting but might end up being crap. *crosses his fingers*
