Left 4 Dead developer, Turtle Rock Studios, has a new game coming out later this year. In short, it’s  similar to the firm’s previous work albeit with a sci-fi setting and one rather monstrous gameplay twist.
Up to four players can band together, working side by side to eliminate alien hordes as they strive to colonise the planet Shear. Thing is, there will be a fifth player joining the fight. Instead of tagging along with the human invaders however, they will assume the role of a ravenous alien beast.
Turtle Rock has yet to detail this unique gameplay quirk though we’re sure to find out more soon. Leading industry mag, Game Informer, has the scoop on a spate of Evolve’s feature, the game taking precedence on their February cover.
The first bit of information to trickle out revolves around one of Evolve’s protagonists. Unlike Left 4 Dead, in which everyone has the same capabilities, Evolve has a defined class system that includes assault, trapper, support, and medic.
Each of these classes also has a specific character attached to it. In the case of Evolve’s assault class, we have Markov. Both burly and intuitive, his increased health count and arsenal of powerful weapons and abilities makes him a suitable human shield for other players.
Speaking of shields, that happens to be Markov’s specialised class ability. Unlike other traits and gadgets, these can be shared across the entire team and, in Markov’s case, summons a shield to soak up damage from enemy attacks.
With three more classes to be unveiled, it will be interesting to see what ability combinations will occur.
Another game which carried a similar premise was last year’s FUSE from Ratchet & Clank developer, Insomniac. Though the class-based system was well-refined, FUSE failed to clean-up where sales were concerned, perhaps due to the game’s strange shift in tone during development.
Evolve is set to arrive on next-gen platforms and PC later this year.

I wonder why they want to colonise the planet with the colossal monsters on it. Hopefully it’s more than the standard precious energy-resource malarkey.

Having a player play as one of the aliens is very appealing to me. However, I won’t know for sure until I learn more before the release date.

For me that’s what it hinges on also. In games like Alien vs. Predator the role reversal didn’t really work. With that said L4D did a good job in letting users play as the infected.

Very much looking forward to this. I loved Left4Dead so I trust Turtle Rock completely to make Evolve amazing.

Sounds pretty cool :-)
