Konami has lifted the lid regarding graphical differences of Metal Gear Solid V between the consoles it will be releasing on, the PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360. The table that has been released by the publisher confirms that the Xbox One version is 720p, while the PS4 will be able to display the full 1080p resolution.
However both systems will be able to run the game at 60fps, while unsurprisingly the last gen consoles will both be at 30fps. Konami has also released some comparison shots for the game, which show the differences between the generations, and it really does show the power that the Fox Engine has.
Head to the Konami comparison page for the images at full size.
On the new gen consoles you can see more detail in the environment, and Snake is slightly more refined, and shinier due to the better lighting. You can really see the difference on the signs as well where it’s blurry on last gen but very sharp on the new consoles. However I am impressed by how good it does look on PS3 and Xbox 360 where in some cases they almost match the PS4 and One versions graphically.

What I really don’t understand is how Microsoft have got this so spectacularly wrong in not foreseeing their console not being as powerful as they first thought.

And just looked on the Konami site and PS3 v PS4 is a world of difference!

It’s strange that the devs are so uniformly blaming the eSRAM (on the Xbox One) which you really think Xbox R&D would’ve nailed and tested with games at 1080p but I guess you can only predict what’s going to happen in the real world and trying to achieve parity with a competitor’s console is tricky when you don’t know what they have or how it will perform itself.
Now… say that all in one breath! Sorry about that.

When developers told Microsoft that the 360 didn’t have enough RAM they upped it, it’s odd something similar hasn’t happened here.
It’s the same amount as the Wii U uses for it’s EDRAM, that should have been a warning light for Microsoft. But I guess they just told developers to….

If you hear one of the architects talk about their design approaches, they say they just went with the 360 approach of using a small but fast piece of memory. Some problems though:
1. I think they got the scaling wrong.: Main memory went up from 0.5GB to 8GB – – 16X more. However, they went from 10mb of edram to 32mb of esram — 3.2x more, much less of an increase.
2. 360 had a better memory balance/architecture than in the ps3. PS4 didn’t bridge the gap, they went one better by going fully unified for actual more ease of use.

I’m all over this for my beloved PS4!

Comparison Gate was’nt just last Gen though, was it? .anyone who used to read Gamestm throughout the PS2/XBOX/G.C era will recal them having a ‘box out’ for comments on difference between all 3 versions of a game.
Usually ended up with Xbox having higher res, more polys, Dolby 5.1 and more online gubbins, GC coming in in middle-place and PS2 having weaker visuals and then it boiled down to which controller you prefered to use.
But for the record, i too are starting to ‘tire’ of these OMG Xbox One version ‘only’ 720P stories (not just here) and i’ve no plans to buy an Xbox One.

I find these articles interesting, and long may they continue. I particularly like the last gen vs this gen comparisons… They just reinforce my decision to take plunge early :-)
I’m just glad I didn’t buy an XO… I’d be pissed if I had!

I’d have thought that most importantly a fluent framerate without any drop was paramount to best quality viewing. Bad frame drop in a game would be more the killer for me than whether it’s either 1080 or 720.
