Metal Gear Solid V Is 1080p On PS4, 720p On Xbox One

Konami has lifted the lid regarding graphical differences of Metal Gear Solid V between the consoles it will be releasing on, the PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360. The table that has been released by the publisher confirms that the Xbox One version is 720p, while the PS4 will be able to display the full 1080p resolution.

However both systems will be able to run the game at 60fps, while unsurprisingly the last gen consoles will both be at 30fps. Konami has also released some comparison shots for the game, which show the differences between the generations, and it really does show the power that the Fox Engine has.

Head to the Konami comparison page for the images at full size.

On the new gen consoles you can see more detail in the environment, and Snake is slightly more refined, and shinier due to the better lighting. You can really see the difference on the signs as well where it’s blurry on last gen but very sharp on the new consoles. However I am impressed by how good it does look on PS3 and Xbox 360 where in some cases they almost match the PS4 and One versions graphically.

  1. These ‘720/1080’ headlines must be killing Microsoft’s PR department.

  2. Are these stories basically going to continue throughout this gen? I hope not. I want actual news ffs. The last gen to new gen pic looks like they’ve just had the brightness turned up!

    • I was just thinking about the same thing. Will this never end? Who gives a damn about this and owns a console? I always though only PC losers were into such bullshit details.

      • It’s quite likely to continue for a while yet. Your best bet is to not click on those headlines!

      • This wouldn’t make them disappear, would it? :P I know what you are trying to tell me “don’t like it? don’t read it”, but moving into such details, shouldn’t be a part of console gaming. I cannot remember when was the last time I looked at the back of a game to see what the resolution is. Who cares about this? Does the game look good? Yes! Does it run good? Yes! Then it’s fine!

      • It’s going to be a while yet before MS gets to grips with the frame rate issues, all caused by the eSRAM being too small.

      • I think it’s very interesting to look at comparisons between systems, particularly between the last gen and new.

It’s cool to see how developers make the jump and how they choose to handle multiple platforms, giving some insight into strenghts and weaknesses of systems.

Comparisons for PC is dull as there’s basically no limit, but with consoles you can compare developers talents as well, by a standard hardware that’s the same for everyone.

If we didn’t care about these things at all, we’d still be playing on N64 and PS1.

      • Of course a next gen version will look and work better and the 720p/1080p issue can be resolved by moving away from the screen. Everyone knows that a human eye won’t realize the difference from a “safe” distance. This matters a lot for PC gamers as they often play with their nose touching the display.

      • There’s always been this kind of comparison. It could have been Mortal Kombat was better on the SNES, but didn’t have blood and gore, the Dreamcast output games at a higher resolution than the PlayStation 2, the three way battle that saw the Gamecube get PS2 ports while the Xbox got better graphics, etc. etc.

Of course, it really came to the fore last generation when there was the early disparity in PS3 and 360 releases, and is still a current and popular issue this generation while developers get to grips with the hardware.

It will continue to be news until a de facto standard is decided upon. Right now, there is no standard. We have developers chosing 60Hz and 720p, others picking 1080p and 30Hz, there might be performance hiccups etc. etc.

Anyway, as I said, you’re probably best off ignoring things for a while. I expect to see you complain bitterly in 6 months time, and not a moment before! ;)

      • I’m usually not giving this much attention either, as the effect on screen is negligible. But, as we are at the very beginning of this new generation of consoles, with most people not having bought a system as yet, this becomes relevant, as it shows performance differences between the two main competitors. Besides, these may also show in other areas, which are possibly more evident, e.g. number of objects on screen, etc.

      • If you have both cosoles you want to get the best version. Until they are the same, the headlines will cotinue.

    • They should continue as they are relevant and news. Some people may own both next gen consoles and will want to buy the game for whatever console it will look or play best on. If they’ve got a 1080p monitor/TV, why buy the 720p option when the 1080p is available. These headlines could/can save people disappointment.

      • What I’m getting at is its clear the PS4 always has the superior version, just like last gen with the 360, so repeating the story for every game has become pointless. For the record I have neither console.

      • @Starman, last gen most games were only slightly better on 360, a handful slightly better on ps3. Not double resolution or framerate like we have been seeing here.

However I agree, and have stated before, that these comparisons will cease to be relevant. I’m sure the hype over graphical disparity will wear off, and it’ll just be the one line in a review ‘as you’d expect, the ps4 version looks better’, as opposed to being in the headline.

    • Sadly, TSA (and all gaming news sites) are going to report with a headline about the resolution as it probably brings in more punters. What would be nice to see, would be a re-prioritisation of information. This article could’ve easily been “MGS V: The reason you bought the new hardware!” or something like that. The resolution differences then mentioned in the article and nothing more than that.

Right now, the media is enjoying the hell out of resolution-gate. Part of me thinks “we had the whole 360 version is better than the PS3” last gen, so sod it… payback for that! Okay, I don’t really think that. I just feel like it’s fine for the PlayStation fans to finally say “how does it feel, bitches?” but it’s not. Wouldn’t it be great if we still get to read about things like this but have instant context on it all so things don’t get whipped up into a shit-storm. The media would soon leave these things alone.

      • Console fanboyism is something I genuinely don’t understand.

I would be funny if the same mentality existed for all consumer electronics though. Currys would be a much more interesting place if you could stand by the DVD players and watch people going ‘Yeah b*tch! My Samsung has 3 HDMI sockets!’ or ‘You JVC lot make me laugh, you don’t even upscale!’…

      • Think of it like this: You know the childish rivalry that happens between people who support different football teams? Think of a more immature version of that.

        Ta-da!

      • You have it with other electronics also (Apple mainly).

    • I agree with Andrewww, we are just at the beginning of this generation and this is the news so far.
As developer tools improve, we may see more parity between the two platforms at a future point but until then today’s news is a very relevant step along the way.

    • These stories were here last gen so there is no reason they won’t be here this gen. It mattered last gen so will probably matter this gen as to determine which console to buy the game for.
It does feel a little bit as though it wasn’t a problem last gen because it was generally the 360 with the optimum version, but now its PS4 its not a big deal.
This has also always been a big deal when comparing with the PC as well. If PC will output better specs then might be worth buying that version.

    • this is not news telling people the cheaper system is better value & more powerful?

so many xbox users being apologists & it doesn’t matter why even upgrade then? the 360 should do you ok!

this is not new this went on the whole of last gen accept it was the 360 getting the better headlines.

  3. I guess full screen, those images would show up more of the divide? At the moment, looking at those pics, the last gen looks barely different from the new gen.

  4. The screenshots need to be viewed on Konami’s website as they have a special viewer there.
The 360 and PS3 versions do look good, even compared to the next gen versions. I’ll probably pick up the PS4 version but i’m also quite interested in seeing it running on PS3, just to see how it compares to MGS4 which was done at the beginning of the PS3’s lifecycle – and at a time when most other developers were still struggling to cope with the PS3 architecture.

  5. They’ve announced a new GZ edition PS4 with a funky hard drive cover too and

    The Order 1886 gameplay tomorrow…DAM

  6. Very surprised to see such differences between the consoles at such an early stage. From now on I can see myself using my X1 solely for exclusives and my PS4 for everything else as it is clearly the better console currently.

  7. It will be really crap then if it’s only 720p on the Xbox one. Just like titanfall is crap cos of the amount of plates there is in multiplayer. Truth is I doubt many of us could tell the difference between 720p and 1080p anyway. This was proven a while back when a game was reviewed and the reviewer said the game looked great with its 1080p graphics only to later find out it was actually running 720p. And that was from a professional games journalist

    • With a slick-moving multiplayer (like COD) then things are going to be zipping around screen and the chance to stop and take in the scenery is almost zero. However, with a single player game… I think 1080p will have people fawning over it more often.

Still agree about the general feeling, though. How many will actually see it!

    • I can see the difference between 720p and 1080p, sitting 6 feet away from a 32″ screen.

      • it makes me cringe when people say they cant see the difference I would get down spec savers fast.

  8. Last gen images look really impressive!
Wonder how much they can cram out of next gen with that engine?

  9. You’ll probably find that most people who are sick of these PS4/X1 comparison articles were more than happy to have them last gen. If you have both consoles, it’s important to know which version is the best.

    • Good point, single player epics very so little between consoles and PCs so graphics are going to be a massive decision factor. There’s no harm in these comparisons as long as the fanboys stay in their grubby little boxes :) Like many others I’m amazed at how good the PS3/Xbox360 versions look, those shots are very very impressive.

    • +1 I have to say I agree there. PS fan but I geniunely like the technical side of games and read alot of digital foundry last gen, when for most part PS3 was second best.

The technical details is often the only thing that separates different versions of games so I think its an obvious thing to point out.

  10. Spent the whole of last generation reading about how much better the ports looked on 360 in comparison to PS3. So I can’t see this generation changing habits :)
