Peek Behind The Scenes Of Sniper Elite 3’s Kill Cam

Time was that practically every FPS to come out was set in World War 2, but these days it’s almost exclusively the preserve of the Sniper Elite franchise. Sniper Elite V2’s kill cam was quite an intriguing take on the slow motion sniper shot, adding a gruesome layer of detail within the victim’s body to show the internal damage the bullet does as it passes through a body. Sniper Elite 3 takes that to the next level.

With Karl Fairburne’s latest mission, he’s off to the war in North Africa, which should make for quite a refreshing change of scenery. However, the sniping action will doubtless stay much the same as before and this certainly includes the kill cams. Making use of the extra processing power of the new consoles and more modern PCs, though surely bringing this to the PS3 and 360 releases too, Rebellion are adding even more fetishistically gory detail to those slow motion kills.

Their latest dev diary goes behind the scenes on just how they’ve iterated upon what was there before and the audio-visual trickery that goes into creating the effect. But there’s also an interesting justification for the system, demonstrating just how deadly a sniper shot was and perhaps peeling back some of the blasé attitude that games can have to mass slaughter of virtual characters.

  1. This is really cool. They’ve clearly put a lot of effort into making it realistic and it looks great.
Having never played a Sniper Elite game I’m not sure how gimmicky this is, after a while I’m sure I’d get bored of seeing this, but it’ll be great to see those one in a million shots in slo-mo complete with blood and bones.

  2. Co-op, with Tef. Please. V2 was good fun. :-)

  3. Never played the original but V2 was a very enjoyable if a little flawed game. It certainly could have benefited from having a better story & the stealth opportunities were pretty limited I found.
Not sure what to make of the African setting here, but I’m always down for the opportunity to shoot people in the head.

  4. This looks great, I really enjoyed V2 so will be picking this up… Hopefully we’ll get YouTube sharing on PS4 in time for this :-)
