Sega Versus Nintendo In Sony Picture’s Newly Announced Console Wars Movie

Console wars are par for the course when it comes to gaming as fanboys and fangirls take to the internet to defend their console of choice, or attack the rival. In the 21st century that war has been dominated by Microsoft and Sony with Nintendo supplying a third side to the tale. But it wasn’t always like that. I remember a time called the 1990s when the Fresh Prince sat on his throne, Power Rangers fought Rita Repulsa, and Sega were in the console race.

We all know how the story ends with Sega bowing out of the hardware area to concentrate on software, but that isn’t stopping Sony Pictures from funding a film going by the name Console Wars to look at the business battle between Sega and Nintendo. The only details that are currently confirmed is that it will be based on a book by Blake J. Harris called ‘Console Wars: SEGA, Nintendo and the Battle that Defined a Generation.’ Harris will be an executive producer while Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will be directing. Scott Rudin, of The Social Network, will be on hand to help develop the film too.

Don’t expect to see Mario and Sonic throwing punches at each other though, as this film will concentrate on the business side of things.

  1. Sounds similar to the BBC drama covering the battle between the BBC Micro and Sinclair Spectrum (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00n5b92) but maybe with fewer tanktops and better beards….maybe

  2. I’d rather wanted to see a heartwarming story about two kids who fight during the console wars and then become friends. They could have added the business side of things just by showing us the lives of their dads, uncles who would have worked at the company.

    • Lol, I thought the same thing when I saw the headline :-)

  3. Sounds great, looking forward to it. It’s got to be good news for the industry when films like this and Indie Game: The Movie get made, they add a huge amount of credibility to what’s still seen as a hobby ‘you should’ve grown out of by now’. Sorry, but it’s not, and games are better than soaps, so nerr.

    • Not for getting out the ground-in grime.
Oh, you mean tv soaps. I’ll shut up now. ;)

      • Ground in grime, wow, it sounds so nineties!

    • OLD SCHOOL! (Next I’ll be saying “hands that do dishes”, or “do the shake n vac”)
