Coming from one of the companies that really brought online multiplayer gaming to the fore on games consoles, it’s a slightly surprising move from Bungie to restrict PvP battling in Destiny until you have levelled up your character. However, it’s also a move that makes a lot of sense.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Bungie’s Tyson Green said, “We found early on that people here in the studio, when they jumped on the game – these were people who were already really familiar with the game mechanics – they would roll a new character, play through the first mission then go right into PvP, and they would just get really beaten up by the other players because they didn’t have a super ability yet and they’d only got an auto rifle from the first mission.
“And they said, ‘this is really awful, this is a terrible experience!’ And we said, ‘you’re right, we have to make sure that doesn’t really happen.’”
It’s a common symptom of first person shooters, that the single player is often ignored in favour of multiplayer at the soonest opportunity. However, with a co-operative always online experience at the heart of the game, and with a lot more in common with certain kinds of action RPGs like Borderlands, it makes a lot of sense to restrict players early on. Since it is a common character that is being used, the need to push people to upgrade the character to a minimum threshold of ability is important.
However, Bungie realise that there’s the potential for too much nannying, and so will only hold you back with your first character. Green continued, “Once you know how the game works, if you want to take a Hunter into PvP at level three, yeah, we’re okay with that. You know what the game is at that point, so that’s your decision to make.”

Might be being quite cynical, but if I can avoid pvp altogether in Destiny, then that would be great!
Slightly concerned by the less than superb verdicts in the hands on previews though.
