Graphical Improvements Discussed For The Last Of Us On PS4

The latest issue of Edge has landed in the hands of eager subscribers and with it comes some mildly exiting claims about one of the PS4’s more eagerly awaited re-releases. The magazine published an interview with the game’s creative director, Neil Druckman in which he says that it is well on track to be significantly improved – visually, at least – on PS4 when it’s released later this year.

That’s nothing more than you’d expect, of course. “Game maker says his latest project will be good” is hardly news and we usually try to resist enabling that kind of rather pointless display of vagueness. But in this instance, Druckman is talking figures and offering relatable comparisons to the PS3 version of the game.

Apparently it’s running at 1080p and 60 frames per second on PS4 and the improvements don’t stop there. They’ve brought over the high resolution character models into gameplay so that they are as detailed as the cut scene models of the PS3 version. They’ve also pushed up the resolution on enemies so that they’re crisper when you’re up close.

Finally, Druckman hinted at a pragmatic approach to making use of the DualShock 4’s unique capabilities, saying that they were evaluating ways of using the touchpad if it was applicable but didn’t want to mess with the core experience too much.

  1. Sounds like they are approaching it in the right way. Looking forward to buying this again! Imagine that

  2. although i was never a massive fan of the original on ps3 i have got my pre order locked in for release day..
this is a game that was destined for ps4,cant wait to see its graphical goodness.
btw is the tomraider ps4v edition worth getting?

    • Yes. Best single player game on PS4.
For graphical difference aone should you have got your money’s worth out the PS3 version? No

But it is the definitive version, unless your PC can cope with TressFX

      • Played the PC version on ultra settings and it’s lovely. However, the tweaks they’ve made to the PS4’s Definitive Edition is something I’d like to experience soon. I keenly followed how things were going to turn out and am very impressed with the changes. Coincidentally, my play-through ran at an almost identical frame-rate as the PS4’s new version which was never, EVER a problem. Gorgeous stuff.

  3. and apparently my keyboard is on its way out..lol

  4. Played the demo, hated it.
Not sure on this, depends what else is out around the time of release.

Tomb Raider benefited from an empty-ish release schedule, if I’m similarly starved of a gaming experience I may buy it… if it’s cheap.

    • You need to play this game for the story more than the gameplay, if you really can’t tolerate playing it, I recommend watching one of the very long YouTube compilations of the cut scenes and significant gameplay moments.

  5. I suppose tarting it up a bit to make it look even nicer than it already looks is the easiest option.

Improving the actual gameplay to an acceptable level would probably be too much to ask for, wouldn’t it?

I know, it’s not an opinion a lot of people share, but while the game looked gorgeous already, and the story and characters were some of the best in any game, the actual gameplay is seriously lacking. It’s just not that great. And they did that thing a lot of companies do these days of “let’s bolt on some pointless multiplayer mode and then sell lots of extras for that”.

    • Did you play it on Hard?

I honestly think that transforms the gameplay. Proper tense survival game where you have to plan every more and avoid using up your weeapons wherever you can.

      • “weeapon”… Is that a water pistol filled with wee? If so, I never managed to find or use that weapon.

    • Did you play the same game I did?

And even if multiplayer is shamelessly tacked on that doesn’t mean it is by default bad, in any game. Just look at uncharted or dead space’s multiplayer.

      • I went into the multiplayer with the belief it’d be just another tacked on, barely playable, uninspired multiplayer too.

But I was pleasantly surprised! I found it to be one of the more enjoyable online games and very refreshing after the likes of COD. While the levelling system put some off I found it a nice, albeit slightly flawed, change. It didn’t feel like there was really any point to continue once you’d got all the online trophies but it was fun while it lasted and nowhere near as tedious as it could’ve been :-)

For a proper tacked on multiplayer mode that’s little more than a trophy grind, try AC4. Now THAT was tedious! That particular platinum was painful… All thanks to the online mode.

  6. Can’t wait for this.

  7. Mine will be via psn as that’s how I got it on ps3. I keep going on about this but that purchase better not be forgotten by SONY! Really looking forward to giving this another shot tho.

    • Same here. I want a discount B-)

  8. “brought over the high resolution character models into gameplay”.
This is what please me most; the cut scenes looked “next gen” already and it was always disappointing to drop down to the lower quality models in the gameplay. To have the game look as good as those cut scenes will be just stunning.
