(Updated) Sunset Overdrive: More Details On The Frantic And Wacky Genre Mash-Up

Insomniac’s Xbox One exclusive, Sunset Overdrive, seems to be a combination of many of their previous games, with a side helping of Tony Hawk’s skateboarding titles. You’ll have the wacky guns a la Ratchet & Clank, Resistance-style monsters, and even a bit of Spyro in there. It looks like a great exclusive.

There’s also some Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi in there, according to a preview in the latest edition of EDGE magazine. It’s all about traversing round the environment in a fast-paced way, with parkour antics such as wallrunning and grinding coming into play.

Some of the weapons include the vinyl disc thrower, a fire-extinguisher-powered teddy bear grenade launcher and a flamethrower/shotgun combo, which you’ll use to take on monsters known as the OD’d in Sunset City, who have been offered a taste test of Fizzco’s new Overcharge Delirium XT drink.

So, it’s a bit like Dead Rising but much more crazy then, too. “You don’t have that shit dead-end job any more, you don’t have that boss breathing down your neck, you don’t have bills to pay and there’s nobody to stop you from climbing on top of buildings, shooting guns, blowing stuff up, cranking the music, or living out your video game fantasies” say Insomniac on the topic.

It’s all about tackling the enemies head-on rather than using cover, and it’s said to be a very different experience. Currently, it’s very much the same as many Xbox One titles, as it runs at sub-1080p, but Insomniac are looking to improve on that, and either way, it looks absolutely stunning.

This sounds like an incredibly different exclusive, and one which offers the thing which games should always strive to give to players – a huge amount of fun.

  1. I don’t say this very often but: day one buy :)

  2. Looking like the only Xbone game that’s of interest to me. Really wish it was coming to PS4

    • I got properly negged over at EG for saying this. It really is the first XB1 exclusive that’s made me sit up and take notice. It’s a real shame it’s not coming to the PS4.

  3. So colourful, there’s almost a nintendo quality to the visuals. I’m still a bit uncertain about the gameplay but at least XB1 finally has a game which piques my interest.

  4. It’s the game they been building up to for the last 20 years?
But they will not release it for PlayStation, where their user base is. The people who has bought Insomniac Games’ games for the last 20 years. Mkay…

They are missing out on the 15½ million of users on PS4 and Vita, where they have plenty of fans, shame they didn’t realise it, because the game looks fun.
