Watch Dogs Day One Sales Are Highest Ever For A Ubisoft Title

Ubisoft has just confirmed that Watch_Dogs has broken the publisher’s record for most copies of a game sold on the first day of release. That means the open world hackathon starring Aiden Pearce is atop a pile that includes titles from the Assassin’s Creed franchise, and the Far Cry series. It’s a rather major achievement for the game that first appeared out of nowhere at E3 2012, and then got delayed late in 2013 at the last minute.

Creative Director Jonathan Morin said:

“I once said that the buzz around Watch Dogs was driven by the incredible passion of our early fans. Today we broke the record for the biggest first day sales in Ubisoft history. I can never say it enough: thank you everyone! We love you all for your passion and your creativity.”

I’ve yet to get my hands on the game but you can read all about what Jim thinks of Watch Dogs in his first thoughts here, his impressions of the multiplayer , and how you can kill time in this virtual Chicago. If you’ve bought the game has it lived up to your expectations?

  1. I’ve only played three hours or so, but I’m having loads of fun on it.

There’s loads of distractions to keep you busy, I’ve barely touched the main missions.

    • I was going to say exactly this, it seems you can barely walk 10 metres without something going on, something interesting happening to divert your attention from the main story. They’ve really created an amazing city with a tremendous amount happening at all times, and each and every citizen appears unique.
I wasn’t interested in the game at all, I fell for the hype and I’m so glad I did.
Those sales are well deserved imo.

  2. I’m not impressed with it at all. Admittedly I’m over a few hours in but I’m not liking the gameplay or mechanics.
What really annoys me is the graphics. I’ve got the game on the PS4 & I honestly think GTAV looks better on the PS3 as I’ve got a TV & monitor & compared them side by side, altho they do have there pros & cons… GTAV having less anti aliasing & not so good in-game character models, but the cars reflections & lighting seem miles better to me. The cars in WD look pants lol.
Apologies for comparing it to GTAV, but considering WD is on a newer generation system, it sucks.
I know graphics aren’t everything, but they do add to the atmosphere & experience. Gonna be an early trade-in for me. Rant over ;)

    • I don’t understand what everyone’s problem is with the graphics. They look fine to me.

Are people just picking faults in the minute details? “OMG that reflection in that tiny window you wouldn’t ordinarily notice looks horrible”.

      • Ok, well look at it this way…
If I sat watching someone else play this game and didn’t see what controller they were holding, apart from a slightly better character model & stable frame rate, I would automatically assume this was running on the PS3 and not a PS4.
I’m talking about the visuals on a whole, not being picky about reflections. The cars driven from a 3rd person view look awful!

Like Eldaveo just stated below… “Don’t even get me started on the visuals, the game looks awful during the day.” – I’m in complete agreement.

One of the first cut-scenes when Aiden first meets his sister on his nephews Bday looks like a joke for a next gen system. Looks like they concentrated on his character, but she looks like a plastic doll with hair made out of elongated yellow post-it notes lol!

  3. just about to start it right now, hope it’s not as boring as AC4

  4. I got the game Saturday but have only had time to play the first mission before going off for the week. I will hold judgement until I’m able to spend a few hours playing it, hopefully over the weekend.

  5. Did you see about the Watch Dogs/PR/Bombscare in Australia?! Funny stuff! I just sunk another 5 hours in this eve. Not even half way through act 1. Just been doing side missions, collectables, etc.. Love the fact you can hack the CToS HQs without firing a single bullet! As for graphics, I think it looks incredible. Better than Infamous. Love it!

  6. Im loving it. Every time i sit down for a 2 hour session i only end up doing about one mission, there are just so many distractions. The city itself is far more alive than any other open world game by far. It really does feel like every NPC in the game is unique.

  7. It’s not a bad game, just not a particularly good one either. The shooting and cover mechanics have been pulled straight from Ghost Recon Future Soldier so are pretty spot on, but the driving controls are horrible and the hacking is far more simplistic than I was hoping. Don’t even get me started on the visuals, the game looks awful during the day.

Still, high sales practically guarantees a sequel so hopefully they iron out these issues and give us something a bit more interesting next time.

  8. Where’s TSA’s review? I’ve been looking forward to it but can’t seem to find it. Surely there’s going to be one seeing as the game is a major release and it’s relatively quiet on AAA launches right now. :-\

    • Judging by the visuals, they got confused and forgot whether they reviewed it on the PS3 or PS4 so can’t remember which platform the review was based on. :) In fact, I’m beginning to think my PS4 is backwards compatible as I think my PS4 copy of the game seems to be a PS3 copy in disguise.

      Sorry, I’ll behave now. ;)

      • To be honest, from what I’ve observed, the PS4 version looks like a remastered version of the PS3 version. It’s amazing how the two are alike, yet the only thing the PS4 version has over the PS3 version is some nice polish to textures, volumetric/particle effects etc.

  9. Only around four or five hours in and i’m quite enjoying it so far, i think the game looks pretty at times and i definitely couldn’t see it looking that good and running as smoothly on 360/PS3. I’m liking the range of vehicles too although the handling could be a bit better.I haven’t bothered with the main story past the opening section as there’s plenty to keep me distracted for the time being.

  10. Not a bad game. Enjoying it so far :-)

But graphically, Second Son is still up there with Killzone tussling for the mantle.
