What We Played #173: Minecraft, Flockers & Destiny

With everyone seemingly too busy playing Destiny to let me know that they’re playing Destiny it is a short What We Played this week. For myself, I’ve been playing Destiny and find myself agreeing with Stefan. There’s also been plenty of Warframe occupying my PS4 as usual.

Blair has found himself waiting around for some new hardware of a fairly mundane sort:

I’ve been waiting for what feels like years for my replacement PS Vita charger to arrive so I can play Velocity 2X on it… it feels as though it’ll be better on there as opposed to PS4.

I played some Destiny with Peter and Aran, and then some more with Peter and Tef. It’s so much fun in co-op, but doesn’t feel quite as fun as the similar Borderlands yet. Saying that, I’ve only played a couple of hours.

As mentioned above, Peter has also been playing Destiny, but has only got “as far as the beta had already allowed”. “t’s a lot of fun, in spite of reusing the same areas a bit too regularly and the missions feeling a little samey. The core gameplay is quite similar to Halo too so it’s great to see those PlayStation fans experiencing that style done so well for perhaps the first time.”

He’s also played “the FIFA 15 demo on both the Xbox One and PS4”. “It was initially quite disappointing because the momentum made it feel like there’s far too many frames of animation priority when I’m trying to do anything on the pitch. I’m getting used to it though, slowly”. He’s reviewing that one so hopes that it’ll click when he spends a bit more time with the game.

Contributing far more words than me to this article is Dan J:

I’ve been completely engrossed by Minecraft this week on the PS4. I hate pixel-art games usually, but Minecraft is something special. I’ve quite high up on the leaderboards which probably tells me I’ve been playing it too much. The map size is noticeably bigger in size compared to the PS3 edition, so much so I haven’t even managed to find a village yet after hours of exploration! I have, however, managed to build a village of my own including a huge farm. There was even an enemy stronghold located deep beneath my home too.

Other than that I’ve played Flockers for a review. Unfortunately it’s really sluggish on the PS4, but I imagine it’s extremely fun to play on the PC with a mouse.

I’ve also played a little of Velocity 2X. It’s bloody brilliant. Fast paced, explosive and has lots of new additions from Velocity Ultra.

Destiny has just come out too, which I haven’t played a lot of yet. I absolutely loved the Beta and just couldn’t resist buying the full game, even if I can’t afford it right now. I’m only level 3 at the moment though, and with Minecraft taking up most my time, I think I might hold off on Destiny for the time being… if I can.

Lastly I’ve had a few online matches on Call of Duty: Ghosts. I saw the season pass going for £11.99 on Twitter the other day which I thought it was too good to miss. The new maps (12 overall) are much better than the ones included in the normal game in my opinion, so I’m very satisfied with my purchase. There’s even a Predator statue in the Ruins level which I love.

Tuffcub would like you all to know that some of his gaming this week took place “whilst going up the side of an active volcano”. That was a suitably Pandoran landscape for him to be playing Borderlands 2 in. And in case that was not enough there was also “a tiny bit of Velocity x2 which I played in actual Jurassic Park”. I get the impression he’s not wandering around London this week.

Right, I’m off to play more Destiny. Have you played anything else this week?

  1. Destiny is massive amounts of fun.

Yes, the story might be a load of nonsense and mostly kept out of the way. But the gameplay makes up for it. And if I wanted a great story and slightly shitty gameplay, I’d watch a film. Or The Last of Us.

Loading times are actually impressive. Yes, there’s a big long sequence when you launch your ship, but some of that gets used for a bit of plot. And once you’re on a planet (or the moon), you’re running around quite big areas with no loading times at all (although I suspect some loading may be hidden by a door opening, at least a couple of times).

The only problem I’ve got with it is that doing all the story missions (and maybe a few patrol missions on Earth near the beginning) will get you exactly as powerful as you need to be for the rest of the game. You’ll be at the exact recommended level and you’ll level up at exactly the right speed for the rest of the game and hit the last mission at level 19.

But after that there’s all sorts of other stuff. The Crucible is surprisingly fun (secondary weapons and being able to hit R1 and/or L1 seem to be key there). Strikes can be nicely chaotic, even with 2 random people. And you can’t even start earning the currency for the best, level 20 weapons until you’re level 18. So plenty of end-game fun to be had. Mostly bounties and the Crucible. And daily things. And the problem of the second sub-class. You can switch sub-class at any time after level 15, but the second one needs to be levelled up from nothing. No grenades or fancy special attacks. Try one of the strikes like that. If you’re a bit mad.

So Destiny is obviously nowhere near as good as the hype would suggest. But it’s still bloody good fun. And Venus is gorgeous. And the music is great. Apart from that song in the credits. Which is terrible.

  2. Been playing a load of Destiny, found myself levelling up to 20 pretty damn quickly. I’m now up to 21 as my ‘light’ just keeps on increasing with all the pretty rare gear I’ve been picking up!

Downloaded the FIFA 15 demo the other day as well and I think it might not seem like there have been many big improvements but the small adjustments have definitely made a big impact. It’s actually possible to go past players now just by dribbling without those disgusting skill moves!

  3. Destiny, destiny and more destiny! Really enjoying it. I just keep going back for more!

  4. Velocity 2X, i’ve hit a difficulty spike about half way through the game but have been enjoying it so far.

Also sinking some hours into Minecraft PS4, currently converting a mountain into a sprawling main base before properly exploring the rest of the map.

And despite all indications to the contrary i picked up Destiny and i’m enjoying it so far, upto level 7. Having never really played an online game before, i was feeling the pinch at level 3 on the last wave of enemies on story mission 4, thinking i wasn’t going to make it, when suddenly one of my friends appeared in game beside me and helped me complete the mission. It was really cool (i’m an online noob remember) getting assistance like that and i appreciated it too but i wonder is there any option to ensure i can play the story missions solo without uninvited companions?

  5. Destiny and Minecraft. I’m quite enjoying Destiny yes it’s a bit samey but with friends and loads of exploring it’s actually fun.
Minecraft is Minecraft. Great, stupid and time wasting.

  6. No Destiny for me yet either.
Mainly Diablo 3 on PS4 and a bit of Minecraft both with my son.

  7. Destiny for me mainly and I’m enjoying it, even though I’ve only just got to the moon. Also Velocity 2X, FIFA 15 demo and NFS Rivals.

  8. Tons of Destiny for me (potentially too much). The story is so far utterly surplus to requirements, but the quality of the gameplay loop of shooting things and improving your gear is perfect as far as I’m concerned.

I’ve mostly been playing with friends and the strike missions in particular promote genuine teamwork. The multiplayer is also of a standard you’d expect from the developers of Halo.

I expect to be playing it for months to come.

I did sneak a few more game of Madden 15 in as well, but I won’t be playing it seriously again until Destiny is done with.

  9. Keep playing Diablo, finished my first play through with my Female Crusader character, only 11 other characters to finish off. also picked up Madden 15 yesterday and OMG!!! awesomeness!!!

  10. Spending my time playing Destiny at the moment and taking a break from Diablo which will be returned to at some point to complete the Platinum. Really enjoying Destiny and while I can understand some being disappointed with one of the most overly hyped games since the last thing Activision overly hyped, it is not, as some reviewers would portray, a crap game. Some of the the reviews are almost as hysterical as the hype for the game. 5/10? Seriously? Machinima gave Aliens Colonial Marines 5 and if they are trying to say Destiny is on a par with Aliens:CM they are so far off the mark they really should stop trying to be Edge magazine along with a couple of others.

Nobody seems capable of perspective these days.

    • They gave Colonial Marines a 5? Should have been 3 at most, that games was awful in so many ways.

    • I’m enjoying Destiny too. For me, any game where I can quite happily play, shoot & loot is good (being a big Borderlands fan for a while). But it was clear to me once I had noticed that I had been playing for a few hours (around 4) without even noticing the time confirmed that it was a good investment for me.

As you say, some will be disappointed with the story, structure, [insert other complaint here], but I for one am pleasantly surprised & don’t regret my purchase one bit.
