Sony has just announced another maintenance date for PSN, this one falling on Monday October 13th from 6pm BST until 1am October 14th.  As usual there’s no indication on what maintenance is being done, but expect disruption to your activities on the network. You will be able to play online as long as you’re signed in to the relevant before maintenance begins, otherwise you’ll have to concentrate on those single player games.
What you won’t be able to access is below.
- PlayStation Store on all devices.
- PlayStation Network Account Management.
- PlayStation Network Account Registration.
- Entertainment services.
- Also no sign in on eu.playstation.com

I’m glad I didn’t buy a PS4. My PS3 is still doing me fine. However, all this downtime for PSN would really upset my if I HAD bought a PS4, as I wouldn’t be getting much out of it. What with not playing DVDs or CDs, and being – in general – a much worse multimedia machine than the PS3 (I know Sony say it’s just a games console but this IS 2014 guys!) and all this recording what you were just playing and being able to send it to your friends – WHY?
Andrew
What do you mean not playing DVDs? It does play DVDs. CDs will play after the next update. But really, who even has CDs these days? The recording feature I found is an excellent feature, I’ve already uploaded a selection of clips from battlefield 4 etc from some of the best moments and some crazy unexpected gameplay. Once youtube uploads is available it will be even better. The psn maintenance has hardly effected me. I think there was one time I fancied playing battlefield and I couldn’t get on. No biggie i’ll play some single player games for a couple hours. I played on my PS3 after playing my PS4 and the graphics were just god awful I just sold it. Could never go back now
Forrest_01
I still own & regularly buy CD’s. Don’t do downloads.
Much prefer physical media I can pick up & have a ruddy good look at before I purchase it.
Additionally, the PS3’s ability to rip songs from CD’s was great & I would really like to see that return on PS4.
Mr Blighty
Its a Shane xbox love downtime doesn’t get equal billing. I wonder why? Its really easy to fool people with biased one sided reporting
CallofDylan
I’m glad someone else on here see’s the obvious biased reporting of downtime. You always speak the truth blighty. You’re a good lad
Youles
Who’s Shane?
I bet he’d know it’s a predominantly PlayStation site (clue’s in the name, wink wink), hence the reporting on this news, to let us know PSN services could be affected – it’s to be informative, not biased. Gosh.

We can certainly try to keep tabs on Xbox Live maintenance down time and maintenance in future, if you like?
Forrest_01
I would actually like to see that. If nothing else to make some comparison over how reliable each is (& put an end to quibbles like this).
I mean I know PSN isn’t great & I have always heard that Xbox live is much more stable & requires less frequent maintenance, but having never owned an Xbox of any sort, I just can’t agree or disagree one way or the other.
cnutard
I completely agree with Forrest. My housemate always goes on about how amazing the Xbox network is compared to the psn, even though he doesn’t own either, but as I too have never owned an Xbox I can’t say otherwise. It’d be nice to see the comparison, so if it is true, I (we?) can say “yeah, Sony need to pull their Forrest out”.
cnutard
“Their Forrest out”? Er… Their finger out* apologies, my mind wanders when I’m typing :s
Starman
Have you tried turning it off & on again?
pdannysan13
Or open a window and let the wind blow some air in there…

Hopefull they actually fix something this time. Im sick of getting message notification only for the actual message to take another 10 minutes to appear. Accessing the friends list in game is a slow experience too. We are paying for PSN now sony, sort it out.
Forrest_01
Unfortunately, I have to agree with this – It seems like a massive backstep when messages, friends lists & trophies (bar the synching process) all worked so well on PS3 & just don’t work well (or at all at times) on PS4.
It makes trying to arrange games & so forth an utter chore & much more drawn out than it should be.
homerjnick
I thought that was just me…it takes an age for the actual message to come through even though the notification is instant…adding new friends fails sometimes too…
Youles
I think it’s because messages are all synced now, rather than being physically sent to a specific console. I guess it had to be streamlines since the Vita, then PS4 were added to the mix. But still, it would be nice to see it improved as it is annoying – and certainly the friends list, it’s game-breaking when a game relies on your PSN friends’ list for invites and no one shows up! :/
Avenger
Sooo… nice to see they’re doing it at a discreet time when hardly anyone will be online.
Let’s face it, out of Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony, Sony are the ones taking the **** the most at the moment.
xIONx
I’m sure someone at Sony has my holiday planner and they cruelly sync downtime just to piss me off!
Hey everyone Driveclub is online! No wait, network down for maintenance. MEH.

I have PSN trouble nearly everyday. I thought it might be my router, but iphone, ipad, macbook, etc.. all work fine. It’s the main reason I’ve never had PS+.
Burkatron
Plug your PS3/4 directly into the router with an Ethernet cable, if it works then its your router setting that’s the problem (usually the NAT type/Port Forward settings).
Plenty of guides here that can help: http://portforward.com/

@Forrest_01 Maybe that’s just me then. I don’t think I have bought a CD in about 10 years. And all my music will get played through my sound system anyway. I’m sure they will add it all back with the new update. I would of thought so anyway, it does seem odd that they wouldn’t allow it to play cds. Otherwise I can’t fault it. However, PSN does need some tweaking. I’m assuming the maintenance time of 6pm is something to do with the time difference and were just unlucky enough for it to be the evening for us
Forrest_01
Oh yeah, it is – We regularly get a ‘premium’ timeslot for maintenance as it suits elsewhere in the world better (at least I assume it does).
Would be nice if it was occasionally (maybe once a year even) at a time that didn’t affect us though. They could even dress it up & say “look here you go – This will be while you are asleep. Aren’t we nice?” & we would probably agree!
Andrew
Thankfully I get Alien:Isolation today so I will be playing offline for several days.
homerjnick
Am I to take it this will be Firmware 2.0 coming very soon?
Carrot381
That was my thinking too.
Burkatron
Anyone moaning about not being able to play CD’s need their head checking. Surely if you are buying them you should already own a capable CD player in the first place? Give them time, the update will come… eventually.
As for the PSN going offline for maintenance, just turn on your PS3/4 before you leave for work/school/college. Job done.
Forrest_01
For me, it’s not the playing of said CD’s I am wanting, but the ability to pop loved songs from my CD collection onto my hard drive for use in downtime/in games… Like I could with my PS3.
Nothing better than replacing a dull soundtrack with one of your choosing (when allowed of course!).
Burkatron
I’m in no way having a go here as I do see your point, but the same answer hits me every time I hear peoples grief by not having the ability to play custom soundtracks. Answer: Mute the music on your game but keep all other track levels at 100%, then play your CD’s in the background and your dedicated soundsystem, then adjust both volume levels to find the sweet spot. I used to do this all the time back in the day on everything from a Megadrive to a Dreamcast :)
Jones81
this is getting really stupid now, it’s not a massive inconvenience but its the principle. If you’ve got time off work or something on Monday but haven’t signed in for a few days you’ll be bang out of luck. And what about those of us who have payed for services like netflix/lovefilm that can’t be accessed during the maintenance?, and on top of that we’re payinf for PSN now aswell!
it’s not a huge inconvienance, but again, it’s the principle. Sony are really falling behind in this area and they need to pull their flipping finger out !
pdannysan13
They played very well during the launch of the PS4 but now they are just getting comfortable.
